Digital Content Editor
Alex Angove-Plumb is a Digital Content Editor at WhistleOut and an award-winning journalist. He's been in the tech publishing industry since 2010, putting him a few short years away from the title of Grizzled Ancient in his chosen profession. He was an original WhistleOut-er before running NBN Co's corporate blog for two years, then moving on to a lengthy stint at CHOICE. Now he's come home.
Over his career, Alex has learned more about phones, telcos, and the NBN than he'd like to admit, and is happy to put his expertise to good use by helping our readers navigate the often-confusing morass of buzzwords and gotchas that tech marketing can throw your way.
When not shaking his fist at kids these days, you might find Alex tinkering about the house doing arguably destructive DIY, messing with one or both of his cats, or trying just-one-more-run in whatever roguelite he's currently obsessed with.
The Lumia 1520 is the best Windows Phone we've used to date, but boy is it big. The 6-inch 1080p display is fantastic, as is the 20MP PureView camera.
The Lenovo Yoga Tab 10 sacrifices screen resolution and light-weight design in order to provide a built-in stand and double battery life
Just because you're back from holidays doesn't mean the excitement needs to stop. Your city is as rad as any other, perhaps you just don't know where to look.
The Mini+ is a Bluetooth handset that pairs with your phone. The idea is that it's easier to pull it out of your pocket to make or receive calls. This is handy for business users, but the average person may not find it useful.
The BoomBass is a funky little speaker that only adds the bassy undertones missing from the Boomsound speakers found on the HTC One family. Unfortunately, you can't really hear it outdoors.
The HTC One Max is a fast and beautiful handset. Unfortunately, even though its screen is only a bit bigger than the Note 3, its size is just past the cliff where its bulk becomes burdensome.
The big iPad rumour may be plausible, but 4K screens are a ways off yet. 4K panels are still far too expensive, and Apple has invested a lot of time convincing its customers that Retina Displays are as good as it gets.
The Galaxy Gear had potential, but it's too big and uncomfortable to guarantee it'll fit you without trying it on first. It's also got a band-mounted camera, instead of opting for futuristic video-watch phone calls.
The Galaxy S4 has the best camera we've ever seen on a phone, but it's not enough to justify the bulky size and laggy phone experience.
It’s difficult to tell if Nokia’s latest offering should be considered a flagship, or a niche device. Our expectations were that it would be the latter, based on its bulky size and seemingly narrow target audience. We were pleasantly surprised to find that this wasn’t entirely true.
