Keen to watch your favourite Disney, Marvel and Star Wars movies with your nearest and dearest, but don’t all live together? Well, now you can thanks to Disney+ co-watching feature, GroupWatch.
Co-watching features are nothing new to the streaming platforms; Netflix introduced TeleParty (formerly Netflix Party), and Hulu has Watch Party. The key difference is that Disney+’s GroupWatch doesn’t require any additional downloads or extensions – and the best part – it works across all devices, not just your TV.
So, you’ve picked the movie you all want to watch – what next? Gather up to six of your friends or family members – they'll need a Disney+ subscription, of course – and invite them through the mobile app or Disney+ website. Just click the ‘GroupWatch’ button on the home page of your chosen movie or TV show. Then it’s just matter of choosing your viewing snacks, getting comfy on the couch and hitting the Start Stream button.
The downside to Disney+ GroupWatch is the lack of a chat room function. You can communicate via emojis, but if you want to write anything more substantial, you’ll have to use a separate group messaging app. But hey, who wants a chatroom on the big screen anyway, distracting from all the action?
It’s also worth noting if you can't invite someone who’s streaming from a Kid’s profile - so make sure you're sending GroupWatch invites to grown-up profiles only.
But wait a minute– can't I already co-watch Disney+ movies and TV shows?
Yes, technically you can – through an app extension called Disney Plus Party. This feature lets you host public and private ‘party’ rooms, so you can watch your favourite movies and TV shows with friends and family – and also total strangers! It’s not affiliated with Disney though; it’s a downloadable extension separate to the streaming service.
