Optus and Nine Entertainment are set to seal the deal on a multimillion-dollar partnership that will see the telco and media giants share the local English Premier League (EPL) broadcast rights amongst their respective streaming services, Optus Sport and Stan.
According to a report by the Australian Financial Review (AFR), the deal will see EPL matches on Stan Sport as soon as August when the 2025-26 season kicks off.
The agreement will be a continuation of what Optus stitched up back in 2021; a massive $600 million deal that gave Optus the EPL streaming rights through to 2028. A deal that Stan contested at the time, hoping to lock down the EPL after successfully snagging the Australian streaming rights to the European Football Championship (UEFA,) a few months prior.
This new arrangement will see Nine Entertainment cover the majority of the already established $100 million per year cost, footing $60 million of the bill while Optus covers the remaining $40 million per year for the next three years while the telco pulls back on its streaming spend amidst a hot MVNO market. In addition to the EPL, Stan Sport will also stream Japan’s J-League, South Korea’s K-League and the Emirates Football Association Challenge Cup (FA Cup.)
For almost ten years now, Optus Sport has been the sole distributor of live EPL coverage in Australia, for better and worse. This new deal will place the fever-inducing football league in more capable streaming hands but it will also come at a price to EPL fans.
Optus customers are likely to retain their generous Optus Sport discounts through SubHub for the duration of this shared deal, paying a discounted monthly rate of $9.99 compared to the $24.99 bill non-Optus customers pay. But those moving over to Stan should expect a price increase. Currently, Stan Sport costs $27 per month at a minimum and there’s no information yet about whether Stan plans to increase that cost with the upcoming EPL investment.
Here's a short list of Optus NBN plans that are eligible for the Optus Sport discount.
