Whether its a full-blown franchise revival or a follow-up to address those cliff-hangers from the original, there are actually quite a number of exciting sequels coming to cinemas in 2026.
So here's our guide to a stack of sequels being released this year and which streaming services will allow you to catch up on the originals.

Slip on your Louboutins because The Devil Wears Prada 2 is making its return to the runway this April.
But wait a moment, you can't fully grasp the gravitas of the Miranda Priestly, Andie Sachs and Emily Charlton-dynamic without first seeing the original. Core cast members from the first film reunite for this exciting sequel to one of if not the most iconic films about the fashion industry.
The original The Devil Wears Prada is streaming on Disney Plus.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 releases in cinemas May 1.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) | In cinemas
If you want a nostalgic blast from the past, the 1993 version of Super Mario Bros. can give you just that. This film is based on the 10th best-selling game of all time and while the live-action version isn't not loaded with colourful CGI, it redeems itself with a killer soundtrack and some impressive practical effects.
If you want something a little more family-friendly, you can catch the 2023 animated version that all the kids are into before checking out its sequel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The modern animated films from Illumination (Minions) are stacked with famous voices like Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Jack Black as Bowser, Khary Payton as Penguin King, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. Donald Glover and Brie Larson join the gang in this year's The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, playing Yoshi and Rosalina, respectively.
The live-action 1993 version is available to stream for free on Brollie and Beamafilm otherwise you can catch it on Foxtel Now. 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie is only available to buy or rent digitally via services such as Apple TV.
Mortal Kombat II
Sequel to Mortal Kombat (2021) | In cinemas May 7
After the middling 1995 Mortal Kombat and its downright terrible 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, it didn’t seem likely we’d ever get another Hollywood adaptation of the bloody video game series, at least here on Earthrealm. In the intervening years, Mortal Kombat has had some solid animated features and a few genuinely decent fan-made movies but in 2021, after a series of delays, we finally got a new live-action Mortal Kombat movie. And if that wasn’t surprising enough, it was actually pretty damn good.
Filmed right here in Australia, Mortal Kombat is primarily focused on the centuries-long feud between Sub-Zero and Scorpion. In the modern day, down-and-out MMA fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan) is being hunted by Sub-Zero for reasons unknown to him. Cole teams up with Special Forces agents Sonya Blade and Jax, and later Liu Kang, Kung Lao and the god of Thunder, Raiden, to compete in the tenth Mortal Kombat tournament.
Mortal Kombat II will introduce the egotistical action star Johnny Cage (played by Karl Urban), Outworld emperor Shao Kahn (played by Martyn Ford), sorcerer Quan Chi (Damon Herriman), Baraka (CJ Bloomfield) and many more.
Mortal Kombat (2021) is streaming on Netflix, Prime Video, Stan and HBO Max. If you absolutely must, Mortal Kombat (1995) and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997) are also streaming on Netflix and HBO Max.
Mortal Kombat II releases in Australian cinemas May 7.
Toy Story 5
Sequel to Toy Story 4 (2019) | In cinemas June 19
The Toy Story series felt like it wrapped things up perfectly with 2010’s Toy Story 3 but almost a decade later in 2019, the toys started a new era with a new playpal, Bonnie.
Now in 2026, Buzz (Tim Allen) and Woody (Tom Hanks) are rounding up the crew for another adventure. When Bonnie is given an “educational” tablet called Lilypad (Greta Lee), Buzz and Jessie (Joan Cusack) call Woody back to the bedroom to help fight Lilypad for Bonnie’s attention.
Every Toy Story movie is streaming on Disney Plus.
Toy Story 5 releases in Australian cinemas June 19 and will be available on Disney Plus later in the year.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Sequel to Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) | In cinemas July 30
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has been through the wringer over the years. After Avengers: Infinity War, he was snapped out of existence, only to be brought back and subsequently lose his mentor and father figure in Endgame. Then, in 2019’s Far From Home, he was deceived by Mysterio and ultimately unmasked by J. Jonah Jameson. In 2021, Peter Parker faced the ultimate multiversal challenge: fighting and rehabilitating supervillains from the wider cinematic Spider-Verse with the help of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. Their victory came with a major cost: not only was Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) murdered by a relapsed Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), but an enchantment caused everyone in the world to forget who Peter Parker was, including his girlfriend MJ Watson (Zendaya) and best bud Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon).
This year, Tom Holland's Spider-Man returns in Brand New Day. He may have his anonymity back, but he’s lost pretty much everything else. A lot of the plot is being kept under wraps, including who Sadie Sink is playing, but we do know he’ll face off against Scorpion (Michael Mando), Tombstone (Marvin Jones III) and The Hand (the ninja assassins from Daredevil).
Speaking of Daredevil, Peter Parker won’t be completely alone. We know an unlikely alliance with Frank Castle/The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) is on the cards and that Mark Ruffalo will reprise his role as Bruce Banner/The Hulk.
Catching up with the Spider-Man movies ahead of Brand New Day is a little complicated. Homecoming is available on Foxtel Now and Stan, Far From Home on Disney Plus and Stan, while No Way Home is available on Foxtel Now, Binge and Stan.
If you want to cast an even wider web, the Sam Raimi trilogy is available on Stan, while Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man movies are both on Disney Plus.
On the animated side, Into the Spider-Verse is on Disney Plus and Stan, while Across the Spider-Verse is only on Netflix. Other cartoon series like Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man (2025), Marvel’s Spider-Man (2017), Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man (2012) and the classic 90s Spider-Man animated series are all available on Disney Plus.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in cinemas July 30.
Dune: Part Three

One of the biggest films of the year is, hands-down, Dune: Part Three. Adapted from Dune Messiah, Denis Villeneuve is finishing up his Dune trilogy with a 17-year time jump into a dark future where the Lisan al-Gaib Paul Atreides is now Emperor, ruling the galaxy with an iron fist. While wed to Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh), Paul’s true love, Chani (Zendaya), remains by his side, despite her growing concern about Paul’s descent into madness and tyranny.
There will be some old faces, like Jason Momoa returning as Hayt, a resurrected clone of Paul’s old friend Duncan Idaho, new faces, such as Anya Taylor-Joy playing Paul’s sister Alia Atreides and some changing faces, Robert Pattinson’s villainous “Face Dancer”, Scytale.
If you’re looking to catch up on all the spice ahead of Dune: Part Three, HBO Max is where you’ll want to look. Dune: Part One, Dune: Part Two and the TV series Dune: Prophecy are all streaming on HBO Max. HBO Max plans can start at $11.99 if you don't mind ad breaks but they can cost up to $21.99 per month if you want all the bells and whistles, like 4K streaming. You can, however, knock the cost down with an annual plan or, even better, get HBO Max completely free with Foxtel.
Dune: Part Three releases in Australian cinemas December 18 and will be available to stream on HBO Max some time in 2027.
Scary Movie

This year’s Scary Movie may technically be the sixth in the series, but it’s the first film since Scary Movie 2 with the creators, the Wayans Brothers, back on board. When the Wayans were essentially asked to take a pay cut for Scary Movie 3, they exited the series and instead focused on their flick White Chicks. While series leads Anna Faris and Regina Hall still brought their A game for Scary Movie 3 and 4, the series was on a rapid decline. Faris and Hall bailed on the fifth movie, and it’s no wonder why - it’s an unwatchable mess that relies on desperate stunt casting.
This year, the whole original crew are getting back together. Not only are Marlon and Shawn Wayans back as Shorty Meeks and Ray Wilkins, but they’re also back on writing duties alongside brother Keenen Ivory Wayans and nephew Craig Wayans. Faris and Hall reprise their roles as Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks, while Dave Sheridan, Chris Elliot, Cheri Oteri, Jon Abrahams, Lochlyn Munro and more reprise their roles from Scary Movie 1 and 2.
If you’re looking for a rewatch, Binge and Foxtel have Scary Movie, Stan has Scary Movie 1, 2 and 5, Paramount Plus has Scary Movie 1, 2 and 3, and Disney Plus is the only place you will find Scary Movie 4.
Scary Movie releases in Australian cinemas June 5.
Avengers: Doomsday

This is the big one, folks. On December 18 (the same day as Dune: Part Three), Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will reunite for the biggest crossover since Endgame. Avengers: Doomsday will bring together heroes from the current MCU and heroes from the X-Men universe to fight a multiversal threat: Dr Doom. More specifically, a version of Dr Doom who looks a lot like Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark.
We would need a whole article to run down all the recommended viewing ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, but the most important rewatches seem to be Fantastic Four, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, Dr. Strange: Multiverse of Madness, The Marvels, Wandavision and Loki. All of which are on Disney Plus. Oh, and Visionquest is still scheduled to release on Disney Plus before Doomsday arrives, so that will no doubt inform some of the upcoming crossover.
Now, you’re probably going to want to scrub up on Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies too (see above) and if you’re in the mood, maybe Deadpool and Wolverine and the classic X-Men movies, which are both on Disney Plus.
That's just the tip of the iceberg this year. Here are some morehorror sequels coming in 2026, including David Harbour as a trigger-happy Santa Claus who will return for Violent Night 2 come December.
Plus some that we don't know too much about yet like Godzilla Minus One which will get a sequel in November, titled Godzilla Minus 0. Also the 90s classics, Cliffhanger, is also getting a sequel due to air in August.
We will continue to update this guide as more sequels are announced throughout the year.
