When Eric Kripke took on the mammoth task of transforming The Boys comic franchise into something fit for our screens, he probably didn't realise it would go quite so viral (or at least as his other super popular series Supernatural).
Pretty soon, the popularity of The Boys resulted in the animated spinoffThe Boys Presents: Diabolical in 2022 and then live-action spinoff Gen V in 2023. Now that the core series of The Boys has wrapped things up with its fifth and final season, fans have a new prequel series to look forward to, Vought Rising, which is set to release in 2027. And while it's still in early development, Diego Luna (Andor) and Gael García Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle) could be bringing The Boys to Mexico.
But to get up to A-Train-like superhuman speed on all things The Boys, keep reading our guide below.
The Boys
TV series | 5 Seasons | Status: Finished
Origin of The Boys
The Boys is based on the popular adult comic series of the same name by Garth Ennis (Preacher, Hellblazer) and Darick Robertson (Transmetropolitan).
It was brought to life by Eric Kripke (Supernatural) in 2016 after being shelved for eight years, as a feature-length film series idea, due to creative differences.
What is The Boys about?
The Boys is about a society where superheroes, aka supes, live among us thanks to a scientifically manufactured drug called 'Compound V'.
Specifically, it focuses on a group of 'ultimate superheroes' known as The Seven (think the Justice League but more depraved). They're supposed to make sure the US are protected at all costs but it becomes quickly apparent they think they're above the law; abusing their powers and privileges thanks to glorification by the government and the public (thanks social media).
The series does a fantastic job and highlighting inequality, taking advantage of others from a position of power, how technology can create a distorted perception of the truth and the lengths (and moral expenses) some people will go to get what they want.
What's happening with The Boys now?
The Boys has just finished airing its fifth and final season as of May 20, 2026.
In total the series has 40 episodes (eight per season) which are available to watch exclusively on Prime Video.
- Watch in full HD on three devices
- Valued at $9.99 per month
- Watch exclusive Amazon Originals, as well as popular movies and TV shows
Gen V
TV series | 2 Seasons | Status: Cancelled
What is Gen V about?
The events of Gen V happen simultaneously with The Boys but instead takes place at Godolkin University, aka God U.
God U is a university dedicated to fostering the education and gifts of future Supes (think X-Men's 'The Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters'). And much like in X-Men, this educational institution was also named after one of its founders, Thomas Godolkin.
Gen V follows a group of students, Marie Morea, Emma Meyer, Andre Anderson, Cate Dunlap, Jordan Li and Luke Riordan, and their journey as students competing to be the top of their field who uncover a web of conspiracies that surrounds the entire Vought organisation.
Why was Gen V cancelled?
Despite Gen V being tipped as the next big thing after The Boys, it was unfortunately cancelled after only two seasons due to high production costs and low viewership. This is thoroughly surprising considering how great the second season was! If you haven't seen this series yet and loved the shock and awe of The Boys, we highly recommend giving it a watch.
The two seasons of Gen V are still available to watch on Prime Video.

Short film | 5 minutes
Directed by Liz Friedlander and written by Eric Kripke, along with The Boys comic writers Darick Robertson and Garth Ennis, Butcher: A Short Film takes place after the events of the Season One finale with Billy Butcher on the run after being framed for the murder of Vought VP Madelyn Stillwell (Elisabeth Shue). With nowhere to turn, Butcher turns to his old SAS pal Jock for help.
Originally filmed as an introduction to Season 2's second episode, showrunner Eric Kripke cut it from the show because he believed it took away from the mystery and intrigue of Butcher's disappearance.
You can watch the short film on YouTube.
The Boys Presents: Diabolical
TV series | 1 Season | Status: Cancelled

Vought Rising
TV series | 1 Season | Status: Coming soon
What do we know about Vought Rising?
Vought Rising was announced at San Diego Comic Con in 2024 as a prequel series to The Boys and Gen V, taking place in New York in the 1950s. It details when Soldier Boy first started out, and Vought started to... well, rise.
The series will see Jensen Ackles (an Eric Kripke regular) reprise his role as Soldier Boy/Ben and Aya Cash will return as Stormfront/Clara Vought, as will Mason Dye as Bombsight/ Robbie.
Some new faces joining them include Torpedo played by Will Hoochman, and Private Angel who will be played by Elizabeth Posey. Ethan Slater is also set to return as Thomas Godolkin. All other characters have been kept under wraps so far, though a number of actors have been named already as series regulars.
The Boys and other spin-off series, including the Vought Rising prequel series, can all be streamed on Amazon Prime Video, as these are all original content made exclusively by the streaming service.
When will Vought Rising premiere?
Vought Rising is tipped to premiere on Prime Video sometime in 2027. An exact date is yet to be announced. In the meantime, check out the recently released trailer below:
Other Vought Rising facts
While Eric Kripke Enterprises is still one of the many production companies associated with the project and he is staying on as an Executive Producer, Paul Grellong (producer on The Boys, Revolution, Law & Order: SVU) appears to be taking the reins on this one as the series showrunner.
The Boys: Mexico
TV series | Status: In development
What do we know about The Boys Mexico?
First pitched in November 2023, The Boys: Mexico is somehow still in the early development phase. What we do know is that it will be filmed in Mexico with a Mexican cast and crew, with creator Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (writer of DC's Blue Beetle) and Executive Producers Diego Luna (Andor) and Gael García Bernal (Station Eleven) already linked to the project.
Very little is known about the series so far except that Eric Kripke revealed that Amazon had received the initial draft of the pilot script and "Amazon seemed to really like it and seemed to be making all the right noises".
Rumours suggest it will take place directly after The Boys series finale.
