The Alien movies have had a rough run of it. While the first two entries – Alien and Aliens – are universally lauded, everything after is a mixed bag. Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection may have as many fans as haters, but prequels Prometheus and Alien: Covenant arguably have more who shun it than those who adore it. Even the 2024 Alien: Romulus sorta prequel has divided fans, if only for the ending chunk.
And, look, the less said about the messy Alien timeline, the better. You can watch every Alien movie in release order. But if you want to watch the Alien movies in chronological order – especially if you're chucking in the AvP crossover movies – you're in for a rough time before you reach the most beloved entries in the series. We're not here to judge, though; we're here to guide. Scroll on for where to watch the Alien movies and the best ways to tackle the tricky Alien movies timeline.
If it involves Aliens (or Predators), you'll find it on Disney Plus. That’s because Disney owns 20th Century Fox, which means it owns all things Alien, including the Alien/s vs Predator spin-offs and the Alien: Earth TV series.
How to watch every Alien movie in Australia
Whether you want to watch the Alien movies in order, out of order, or individually, there's only one place to stream them all in Australia: Disney Plus. With a Disney Plus subscription (be sure to check for a Disney Plus deal), you can stream all seven mainline Alien movies, Alien vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, as well as the Alien: Earth TV series.
How much does Disney Plus cost?
Before you stream, you'll need to pick a Disney Plus plan. Disney Plus Standard costs $15.99 per month or $159.99 per year for two Full HD streams. Alternatively, pay $20.99 per month or $209.99 per year for Disney Plus Premium, which offers four streams in up to 4K quality with HDR. Because Disney isn't a fan of password sharing, you can pay $7.99 per month to add one extra member to your subscription who doesn't live with you.
What is the Alien series about?
The Alien series follows the many encounters of humanity with a terrifying xenomorph bioweapon, which the shady Weyland-Yutani company is desperate to possess. That creature is the titular "Alien". The first four movies – Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), Alien 3 (1992), and Alien: Resurrection (1997) – follow the plight of Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), as she's the sci-fi equivalent of the Brody family's luck when it comes to being hunted by creatures who have a taste for human flesh.
Ridley Scott, the director of the first Alien movie, returned to the franchise with two Alien prequels: Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017). These Alien movies explored the origins of the xenomorph. Since then, there's been the Fede Alvarez-directed Alien: Romulus (2024), which tells an adjacent Alien story set between the first two Alien movies. There's also an Alien: Romulus sequel in the works, though Alvarez reportedly isn't returning to direct.
If you want to do the full space story, you'll also need to check out the Alien: Earth TV series, which is set just before Alien. It follows the stories of a group of hybrids (human consciousness in synthetic bodies) as they battle five space monsters that crash in the territory of their corporate overlord.
How to watch the Alien movies in chronological order
Honestly, you're in for a rough time if you watch the Alien movies in terms of where they fall in their in-universe timeline. We highly recommend at least watching them in release order. That way, you get the full Ellen Ripley story before you have to shift onto some not-so-great Alien movies. While we've listed the Alien vs Predator movies below, you can skip them as they don't really add anything to the Alien universe.
If that sounds good to you, here's the list of Alien movies in release order (with our recommendations of which version for the relevant flicks):
- Alien (1979), theatrical or director's cut
- Aliens (1986), director's cut
- Alien 3 (1992), theatrical or assembly cut
- Alien: Resurrection (1997), theatrical cut
- Alien vs. Predator (2004), uncut version
- Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007), uncut version
- Prometheus (2012)
- Alien: Covenant (2017)
- Alien: Romulus (2024)
- Alien: Earth (2025)
The big disclaimer for the list above is that you can only find theatrical versions of all of those movies on Disney Plus. Despite having the functionality to offer alternative versions of its movie catalogue, Disney has bizarrely chosen not to offer extended versions for any of the Alien movies. That's okay for most of them, but the theatrical version of Aliens is an incomplete story compared to the Aliens director's cut.
If you want to know what order to watch the Alien movies in chronological order (including the related Predator entries), here's the Alien movies in chronological order for the in-universe timeline (for a deep cut Easter egg, start with Predator 2, which is set in 1997):
- Alien vs. Predator (set in 2004)
- Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (set in 2004)
- Prometheus (set in 2093)
- Alien: Covenant (set in 2104)
- Alien: Earth (set in 2120)
- Alien (set in 2122)
- Alien: Romulus (set in 2142)
- Aliens (set in 2179)
- Alien 3 (set in 2179)
- Alien: Resurrection (set in 2381)
