Want to score a free Galaxy S10+? Pre-order one of Samsung's crazy new QLED 8K TVs through the company's online store before April 1, and you'll earn yourself a bonus 128GB Galaxy S10+ valued at $1,499.
A free phone always sounds good, but wait until you see how much the TVs cost - Samsung's 8K range starts at almost $10,000. Pricing is as follows:
- 65-inch Q900 8K QLED: $9,999
- 75-inch Q900 8K QLED: $12,999
- 82-inch Q900 8K QLED: $17,499
And we thought phones were getting expensive.
So what exactly is an 8K TV? 8K is the next major step up in TV resolutions, boasting over four times as many pixels as a current top-end 4K display. 4K displays typically run at a resolution of 3480x2160, while an 8K display will run at 7680x4320. In short, it's a much more detailed picture.
Of course, there's the question of content. You'll struggle to find 8K video outside of demo reels; even 4K is still far from mainstream in Australia. However, Samsung says its new TVs are able to upscale existing content for higher resolutions via a machine learning algorithm.
While it's possibly Samsung is able to work some tech wizardry to make your existing shows and movies look better, we'll be very interested to see just how big a difference this makes. Adding in detail that wasn't originally captured isn't an easy feat.
