Foxtel has finally expanded the reach of its Foxtel Go app beyond iOS, but rather than targeting Android generally, it has released the app only for Samsung devices.
Continuing its partnership with Samsung, Go will be available on the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note II and Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet via the Samsung App Store. No mention of the Galaxy S4 was given, nor any Android device not made by Samsung.
The app will also be available on any PC running Windows XP Service Pack 2 and IE8 or higher and Macs running OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 with Safari v.5 or higher. iPad, iPad Mini, iPod Touch 5th gen and iPhones 4, 4S and 5 were already supported.
The service has been expanded to allow syncing to 3 devices, up from the previous 2. Of these 3 devices only 2 can stream simultaneously.
What’s the Go?
Foxtel Go is a mobile app that allows Foxtel subscribers to access their channels while out an about. 3G/4G and WiFi networks both support streaming. You can only access the channels for which you are a paying subscriber and not all channels are available.
Up to 59 regular channels and over 50 channels on demand for catch-up viewing are provided.
You can also use your Go app to record shows and movies remotely. This is actually one of Go’s more useful features. While watching TV while not at home is pretty cool, it can use a hell of a lot of data over a 3G/4G connection. The option to remotely record content while you’re not at home and watch it later poses no such issue.
Go is only available for regular Foxtel, Satellite Foxtel and Foxtel Play subscribers. Foxtel on Internet, Optus TV featuring Foxtel, Foxtel on T-Box and Foxtel on Xbox subscribers do not have access.
You can download Go from the Foxtel website, or from the Samsung App store.
