Back in the day, unlimited calls and messages were a rarity in phone plans. A big part of finding great value was in figuring out how many calls and messages you made each month. Dark times.
These days, unlimited plans are ostensibly the standard. With this in mind, we tend to compare plans by looking for plans that offer best data inclusions for their price range.
Just in case there is any confusion, these plans don't include unlimited data; no mobile phone plan in Australia does. Data inclusions are on the rise though, and plans including 5GB or more becoming increasingly affordable
Top 10 cheapest plans with unlimited calls and SMS
It might be hard to believe, but the starting cost for plans with unlimited calls and SMS is now well below $20 per month, and with competition as it is, this price is getting lower all the time.
This top 10 list contains both postpaid and prepaid plan options. This isn't surprising when you consider how similar many of these plans are. All are no contract; all include calls, messages and data; and all credit last for at least 28 days.
Top 10 unlimited plans with at least 5GB of data
So what if you want a little bit more data to go with your unlimited talk and text? This list has ten plans that give you at least 5GB of data per month, and in my cases, more.
While you can get an unlimited phone plan for under $20 these days, the jump in data between sub-$20 plans and sub-$30 plans is huge, so it might be worth considering spending a few dollars per month for a far more generous allowance.
Top 10 plans with big data
Netflix, Stan, Foxtel Now, YouTube. If there's one thing that can blow your data budget each month, it's video streaming. There's good news though: you don't need to avoid videos on your phone, you just need to plan ahead and choose a plan with enough data to handle all the bits and bytes you plan to stream.
These plans are the top 10 big data plans for under $60 per month. There are a few more expensive options available, but you shouldn't need to pay more than $60 per month for a BYO phone plan with a whole lot of data included.
It is however worth noting that some of the plans in the table below are 3G-only, which means your data speeds will be slower than on a 4G network. That said, 3G is still fast enough to stream high definition video through services like Netflix and Stan.
