NBN Satellite Dish

NBN today announced that subscribers connecting to the National Broadband Network via a Sky Muster Satellite connection will now able to purchase plans with monthly allowances as high as 300GB. As with current NBN Satellite plans, these inclusions will be split into a peak and off-peak off allowance, with up to 150GB available during peak hours.

NBN defines off-peak as between 1am and 7am in your local time-zone.

Prior to today, the maximum download allowance for a Satellite NBN plan was 150GB, with a maximum of 75GB being available for use during peak hours.

NBN Chief Customer Officer John Simon says the company wanted to take a careful approach to managing the available capacity across the satellite network before offering plans with larger data allowances.

"It is far more preferable for us to offer smaller data allowances and then increase them, than launch with bigger data packages and then have to cut them back if we hit capacity issues," said Simon.

"However, once we got both our satellites launched and operational we devised a whole bunch of ways in which we could make our satellite platform work a lot more efficiently and thereby increase the overall capacity available."

"Much of this has been possible because we are now working with real world data generated from our two Sky Muster satellites delivering commercial services, so we now have a much better understanding of how they work in an operational environment."

Today's announcement doesn't mean that all providers will begin selling higher allowance Satellite NBN plans immediately, but we'll hopefully see some arrive in the coming weeks.

SkyMesh is one of the first Satellite NBN providers to jump on board, and has two new top tier plans. These consist of a $124.95 per month option with 230GB data (split into 90GB peak and 140GB off-peak) and a $199.95 per month option with 260GB of data (split into 120GB peak and 140GB off-peak).
