Inflight Wi-Fi checks in at Virgin

21 April 2017

Hot off the heels of Qantas' inflight Wi-fi launch, Virgin has kicked off its own sky high Wi-Fi trial. As with Qantas, Virgin only has one internet enabled aircraft in its fleet: a Boeing 737, with the registration VH-YIG. It will spend most of its time flying up and down Australia's eastern coast.

The trial will go for three months, during which access to inflight Wi-Fi will be free. Virgin will finalise the business model for inflight Wi-Fi "after considering customer feedback and the results of the testing period".

Like Qantas, Virgin has a couple of offers for customers testing out the inflight Wi-Fi service. If you end up on Virgin's Wi-Fi plane, you'll get three months of free access to Netflix, Stan, and Pandora Plus. If you've already got Netflix or Pandora Plus, you can apply the offer to your existing account. The Stan promotion applies to new subscribers only.

On a related note, if you happen to be flying Virgin a lot - well, if you're a Velocity Frequent Flyer - you can save 10% on select Virgin Mobile plans. Here's a few of the eligible plans:
