Australia's fourth largest telco, amaysim, has expanded out from phone and internet plans into energy services recently, and to kick things off, it is giving away a year's free NBN to customers who sign up for an eligible energy plan before May 20.
And it's not crummy, slow NBN either. As part of the offer, customers will get a Standard Plus service (NBN 50) with unlimited data, valued at $70 per month.
The deal is available when you sign up to an eligible energy plan. Customers must live in an NBN-ready area also covered by amaysim's energy. This includes homes in NSW, VIC, QLD and SA. But to be sure, you'll need to run an address check on the amaysim website.
Signing up for the internet service is free, but you will need an NBN compatible modem if this is your first time on the new network. amaysim sells Netcomm modems to new customers for $109, or you can BYO modem if you'd prefer.
And, all amaysim services are contract free, so if you want to switch to a different provider for your energy or NBN, you can. As you'd expect, if you cancel your energy service in the first 12-months then you forfeit the free NBN offer too.
Is this a good deal?
To be perfectly honest, the WhistleOut team are experts in phone and internet plans, but we don't know too much about energy pricing. You're best to compare energy prices on a site like the Government's Energy Made Easy website, run by the Australian Energy Regulator. Make sure you have your latest bill handy to get an accurate estimate.
But we do know NBN plans, and free NBN is definitely better than the NBN you have to pay for. A saving of $70 per month equals $210 per quarter, which could make this bundle a bunch cheaper than paying for these services separately - though your mileage may vary.
We're impressed that the offer includes an NBN 50 speed service rather than the Basic speed NBN that amaysim also sells. NBN 50 is our go-to recommendation for most households. The bandwidth you get is enough to keep all members of larger families online and happy, with speeds suitable for streaming movies and TV at the best quality resolution from services like Netflix and Stan.
Importantly, NBN 50 is a major improvement over the old ADSL services that most of us will be moving from. Hopefully, it'll give you a sense of why building the NBN is such an important infrastructure project.
When your promotion period expires, you can also be confident that you'll be paying a fair price for the internet if you choose to remain an amaysim NBN customer. amaysim NBN prices tend to be affordable, if not the cheapest, and because the plans are no-contract, you'll benefit from any price drops as they happen.
