Starting today new Telstra customers get $120 off selected NBN plans over the course of 12 months.
Any unlimited NBN plan with the provider priced in excess of $90 per month will get a monthly discount of $10 for your first year with the provider. This brings Telstra’s prices down to $80 for NBN 50, $89 for NBN 50 and Telstra TV and $100 for NBN 100. After the first 12 months the plans will revert back to original pricing.
Even with the discount Telstra's NBN 50 plans are still expensive, comparable plans range between $60 and $65 per month. Check out some other options below.
Similarly the NBN 100 option is also pricier than others in the market by around $15 - $25 per month.
While it's clear that Telstra is a more costly option, the provider offers perks which help to subsidise these costs. Each aforementioned plan comes with unlimited data, a home phone service, Telstra’s second generation Smart Modem with 4G backup, a three month Binge subscription (which can be extended by another three months by signing up for Telstra Plus), and bonus Telstra Plus Points.
Opting for the NBN 50 plan gets you 20,000 bonus Telstra Plus Points and NBN 100 will get 40,000 bonus points. These are part of a loyalty program called Telstra Plus where you accrue points for dollars spent with the provider, these can then be used for products and discounts. Read more about Telstra Plus here.
All plans - bar the Telstra TV bundle - are on a contract-free basis so you’re free to leave once the discount runs out or if you’re unhappy with the service. You’ll simply need to pay out the remainder of the modem which is $9 for each month left before hitting two years ($216 maximum).
The Telstra TV bundle is sold on a 24-month term, but there are no penalties for breaking your contract. You'll just need to pay out the remaining value of your Smart Modem and Telstra TV.
If you’re not satisfied with your connection within the first 30 days, and it can’t be fixed then you can use the NBN Satisfaction Guarantee to end your service with no penalties. This is available on all plans and comes at no extra cost.
It’s worth noting that Telstra’s 4G backup means that you can connect to the provider’s mobile 4G network as soon as you receive your modem, and it will kick-in in the event that your NBN connection is down. Speeds are capped however at 6Mbps down and 1Mbps up, which is just enough to keep you online and able to do the bare minimum.
Telstra says its NBN 50 plans have a typical evening speed of 44Mbps, while NBN 100 plans have a typical evening speed of 88Mbps. Telstra's NBN 100 plans are only available to customers with HFC or FTTP NBN connections.
While these typical speeds are the most widely advertised, Telstra reports its real world average speeds periodically, with the latest figures from May noting speeds of 46.78Mbps on NBN 50 connections and 93.23Mbps on NBN 100.
