Optus has increased its typical evening speed guidance for plans as fast as NBN 100, ostensibly promising congestion free connectivity during peak hours. Optus is now reporting that customers can expect typical evening speeds of 100Mbps on NBN 100 plans and 50Mbps on NBN 50 plans.

Typical evening speeds refer to the NBN performance customers can expect during the busiest times of the day - between 7pm to 11pm. In short, this new speed guidance suggests Optus customers will be able to get the maximum speeds available on their plan tier no matter what they want to get online.

Optus NBN 50 plans start at $75 per month, while NBN 100 plans start at $95 per month. Just be aware that the plans also attract a $99 upfront fee, and you'll need to pay a modem fee if you leave within your first 36 months. This is equivalent to $7 multiplied by the number of months left in your three-year term.

Optus previously reported rather respectable evening speeds of 90Mbps on NBN 100 plans and 45Mbps on NBN 50 plans. The increase however puts it in equal first place alongside Telstra for those two speed tiers. Aussie Broadband is also up there, reporting typical evening speeds of 99Mbps on NBN 100 plans and 50Mbps on NBN 50 plans.

While Optus' speed increase is promising, it is worth noting that factors like in-home wiring and equipment can result in lower speeds than expected. In addition, customers on FTTN plans will be limited to the maximum speeds their connection can achieve. A FTTN premise needs to be within 400 metres of the local exchange to have a chance of achieving NBN 100 speeds.

Optus has however held firm with its speed guidance for NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans, reporting 215Mbps and 250Mbps during peak hours, respectively. This is very much in line with the rest of the industry. Aussie Broadband does however report typical evening speeds of 248Mbps on its NBN 250 plan.
