NBN Co has begun industry consultation on 2Gbps NBN plans that would be available to both residential and business customers. The network builder is proposing three variants within the "Hyperfast" NBN 2000 speed tier:
- A plan with download speeds of up to 2,000Mbps and upload speeds of up to 200Mbps for home FTTP customers
- A plan with download speeds of up to 2,000Mbps and upload speeds of up to 100Mbps for home HFC customers
- A plan with download speeds of up to 2,000Mbps and upload speeds of up to 500Mbps for business FTTP customers
The FTTP NBN 2000 plan would effectively double the upload speeds of an NBN 1000 plan and offer four times faster upload speeds. NBN 2000 plans would only be available to customers with FTTP and HFC, and these customers would require a new Network Termination Device to support the speeds (and potentially a new router).
There's no timeline on pricing or availability for NBN 2000 plans, but NBN Co has asked providers whether they'd like these plans to be made available at the same time as speeds are increased on NBN 100, NBN 250, and NBN 1000 plans for FTTP and HFC customers.
Under the proposed changes, NBN 100 plans would see their maximum speed increased to 500Mbps and NBN 250 to 750Mbps. NBN 1000 plans would retain their maximum download speed, but see upload speeds doubled to 100Mbps.
NBN Co has been seeking provider input on these changes, and hopes to roll them out by the end of the year. Depending on how consultation goes, we might see NBN 2000 plans at the same time.
