NBN Co has announced that over nine million homes and businesses are eligible to order NBN 1000 plans, thanks to its Fibre to the Premise (FTTP) upgrade program.
The upgrade program allows Aussies with a Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) to swap to the best NBN technology type at no extra cost.
FTTN is widely considered the worst NBN technology type due to its extensive use of copper. As such, many FTTN premises struggle to achieve 100Mbps speeds. FTTC is more reliable than FTTN, but it's limited to the NBN 100 speed tier.
Meanwhile, customers on FTTP can access faster NBN 250 and NBN 1000 speed tiers, and will be able to access the upcoming NBN 2000 speed tier in September next year. NBN 2000 plans will be able to achieve download speeds of up to 2000Mbps and upload speeds of up to 200Mbps on residential plans.
If you're in an area eligible for an upgrade, you can start the process by ordering a faster NBN plan through a telco of your choice by ordering an NBN 100 plan or better. Just note that you'll need to stay on this plan for a year, or you may need to pay NBN co a $200 fee.
While timelines can vary, NBN Co aims to complete FTTP upgrades within a matter of weeks. Read more about the process of upgrading to FTTP here.
You can check if your address is eligible for an upgrade on the NBN Co website.

As many as ten million homes and businesses will be able to order NBN 1000 plans by the end of 2025.
