NBN providers are now able to sell Fixed Wireless customers 200Mbps and 400Mbps plans, as part of NBN Co's upgrades to the technology type. Around 300,000 premises in eligible areas will be able to order plans on the new speed tiers as soon as providers start offering them. This is set to grow to 700,000 premises by the end of the year.
At this stage, WhistleOut understands that business-focused NBN provider APN is the only telco to have started offering the new speed tiers to its customers so far. Leaptel, Activ8me, and Aus Internet should have the plans shortly, and we're expecting that more providers will follow in the coming weeks and months.
The new speed tiers represent a significant bump for Fixed Wireless customers, who were previously limited to 100Mbps. While every premise in the Fixed Wireless footprint can order a 100Mbps plan, not everyone will be able to order the new tiers. When upgrades are finished, the 200Mbps plan will be available to 90% of the Fixed Wireless footprint, and the 400Mbps option to 80%.
We haven't seen retail prices for the new speed tiers yet, but a 200Mbps is $5 more expensive than a 100Mbps plan at wholesale prices, and a 400Mbps is $10 more expensive. 100Mbps Fixed Wireless NBN plans currently sell for around $85 per month at retail prices, so it wouldn't be surprising to see 200Mbps plans at the $95 per month mark at 400Mbps at around $105 per month.
Fixed Wireless NBN users can check if their household is already eligible for a faster plan through the NBN Co website.
When a customer orders one of the new plans, they may need new equipment installed to support the speeds. If this is the case, the turnaround time should be around two weeks.
