Aussie Broadband will start selling NBN 1000 plans from Friday, allowing customers to reach speed as fast as 1Gbps. The plan will retail for $149 per month and include unlimited data.

NBN 1000 is a brand new speed tier that offers download speeds up to ten times as fast as an NBN 100 plan. Of course, real world speeds can and will vary. Since Aussie Broadband hasn't previously sold this type of plan, it's being careful to not over-promise.

"We think that the plan should achieve off-peak speeds of up to 80-90%," said Managing Director Philip Britt.

"For the moment, we will be advising customers our peak evening speeds for our 250Mbps plans as a baseline until we have collated enough data from our own network testing."

Evening speeds of 250Mbps would make Aussie's NBN 1000 plan roughly three times faster than its NBN 100 plans, which promise evening speeds of 86Mbps. At $149 per month, that's still solid value.

In terms of upload, NBN 1000 plans offer speeds of up to 50Mbps.

Of course, only select customers have the kind of physical connection necessary to support an NBN 1000 plan. NBN 1000 plans are only available to customers connecting to the NBN via FTTP, as well as some HFC premises. Aussie expects this to grow over time.

To ensure customers are able to make the most of their lighting fast connection, Aussie recommends that anyone taking up an NBN 1000 plan opt for a Google Nest Wifi for their router, suggesting that more basic routers may not cope with such high speeds. These are available directly from Aussie. Prices start at $249 for a single Nest Wifi, $369 for a Nest Wifi with a Nest Point, or $499 for a Nest Wifi with two Nest Points

Alternatively available through retailers such as JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman, or direct from Google.

In addition, Aussie Broadband is dropping the price of its NBN 250 plan to $129 per month, down from $169.
