69% of new Aussie Broadband customers are opting for the fastest three NBN speed tiers, following NBN Co's wholesale pricing changes at the end of last year. These changes saw the price of NBN 50 plans increase, but the cost of NBN 100, NBN 250, and NBN 1000 plans come down.

Aussie Broadband revealed this as part of its half-year results, where it also noted that its NBN market share has now grown to 8.3%, up from 7% at the end of 2022. These figures exclude satellite NBN customers.

Managing Director Phillip Britt attributes some of this growth to the pricing changes.

"This [result] was achieved through increased marketing and promotions, and a campaign specifically designed to offset any increase churn and take advantage of increased buying activity in the market following the NBN [wholesale] price changes," said Britt.

When NBN Co's wholesale pricing changes came into effect at the end of last year, Aussie Broadband had aggressive promotions on its NBN 100, NBN 250, and NBN 1000 plans. These included a deal where its NBN 100 plan was the same price as its NBN 50 plan for a 12-month period.

Despite Aussie Broadband's overall growth in market share, it did see an increase in customers leaving as a result of the price rise. Britt said the number of customers leaving was "less than anticipated", and that there's an opportunity to gain customers from NBN providers that haven't increased prices for their existing subscriber base.

"It is our view that some challenger brands in the market may not have yet repriced their existing customer bases and could potentially see higher churn if they do reprice," said Britt. "This could create a churn point and upside opportunity for Aussie Broadband.

NBN Co's wholesale pricing changes were effectively designed to encourage customers to move to faster speed tiers. NBN 50 has long been the most popular internet speed tier among Australian households, but Aussie Broadband's results suggest that could be starting to change.
