The ACCC has released its 26th Measuring Broadband Australia report, and Exetel is back on top as the fastest NBN provider. Exetel has done very well in the reports, but was dethroned by Telstra last quarter.
The latest ACCC report found Exetel customers receive 102.5% of their NBN plan's maximum speeds during the busiest hours of the day (between 7pm and 11pm).
Telstra dipped back into second place, with its customers found to get 102.3% of plan speeds during busy hours. Optus and Superloop tied in third with 101.6% of plan speeds during busy hours, marking Superloop's best performance in the report yet. Optus was also in third place last quarter, but didn't share the spot with anyone else.
The report monitors 12 telcos in an attempt to find the fastest provider. Telcos featured include Aussie Broadband, Dodo, Exetel, iiNet, iPrimus, Launtel, Leaptel, Optus, Telstra, TPG, Superloop, and Vodafone.
Here's the full breakdown of how they all performed:

The report found that busy hour speeds for fixed-line NBN are faster yet again. Customers achieved 100.4% of their plans' download speeds, up from 99.8% last quarter. This is the first time the Measuring Broadband Report has seen this figure hit over 100%. As such, the average fixed-line NBN user is no longer experiencing congestion.
NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans are technically capable of achieving faster than the maximum speed tiers these plans allow, which is why these figures hit over 100%. NBN Co overprovisions download speeds on these tiers by 10 to 15%. This is intended to counterbalance the bandwidth used to deliver a service.
Compare NBN 50, NBN 100, NBN 250, and NBN 1000 plans from the providers in this report:
The Measuring Broadband Report also includes fixed wireless NBN plans. The report shows a significant improvement in speeds over the last six months, thanks to faster Fixed Wireless Plus plans that can now hit speeds of up 100Mbps.
The average download speed for the fastest NBN Fixed Wireless Plus services was 96.7Mbps in May this year, up from 58.8Mbps for all fixed wireless plans in December last year.
This compares to an average download speed of 58.6 Mbps for all NBN fixed wireless services in December 2023. Download speeds during the busy hours of 7 to 11pm on weeknights increased from 49.8 Mbps to 78.2 Mbps across the same comparison period.
The report also found that fixed wireless customers on all plan types were now getting 100.1% of maximum plan speeds during regular hours, and 84.1% during busy hours.
As always, it's worth remembering the scale of the ACCC's testing. The results come from a month-long testing period in May across 1,256 NBN connections. All but 66 of these households have a connection with one of the 12 providers featured in the report. The ACCC reports a 95% confidence level in its results.
