Faster internet speeds are growing in popularity, with NBN Co revealing almost 700,000 customers swapped ot an NBN 100 plan or faster during the 2025 financial year. This means 32% of Australians are now on an NBN 100 plan or faster, up from 24% at the end of the 2024 financial year.
Here's a look at the most popular NBN 100 plans right now:
While NBN Co didn't provide any specific reasons for the uplift, prices between NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans have narrowed over the last few years. In many cases, NBN 100 plans are available for just a few dollars more per month than an NBN 50 plan.
NBN Co's free FTTP upgrades may have contributed. More than 805,000 premises have upgraded to full fibre through the program so far. In the case of those upgrading from FTTN, they may not have been able to get an NBN 100 plan in the first place.
When NBN Co's speed upgrades go live in September, many NBN 100 customers on FTTP and HFC technology types will be upgraded to NBN 500 at no cost. NBN Co CEO Ellie Sweeney eventually expects this new speed to become the most popular.
"Looking to the future, it is NBN’s aim that our 500 Mbps wholesale speed tier becomes Australia’s most popular NBN plan," said Sweeney. "And thanks to our investments in the latest technologies and network upgrades, we expect to lift average fixed broadband speeds across the nation."
In addition to demand for more speed, NBN Co saw a 13% increase in data usage. The average premises now uses 508GB per month.
The jump in data usage was bigger for satellite NBN customers, with a 24% increase to 153GB per month, following the wider rollout of unlimited Sky Muster Plus Premium plans.
