Who actually wants to pay for a utility you’re not using? There is a chance that the NBN speed tier that you’re on may be excessive for what you actually need. This means you’ve probably got extra speed, or extra data that you really don’t use - but you’re still paying for it.
Stop that.
While the blanket recommendation for most households is an unlimited NBN 50 plan, smaller households or less data intensive users might not need this. Thanks to some recent changes, a big chunk of providers now offer congestion-free plans across a range of speed tiers. This means that even during the busiest periods of the day you can expect to achieve the maximum download speeds available.
For example, some households may be able to make do with an NBN 25 plan. With speeds of 25Mbps, you are able to stream Netflix in HD on five screens simultaneously - it’s actually a lot quicker than you’d realise.
No matter how you slice it, you can probably afford to save some cash on your NBN plan. Let's take a look at NBN plans under $50, and under $60 per month.
NBN plans under $50
While the majority of these plans are for NBN 12 (which you don’t want), there are a few sitting at NBN 25 speeds (and a sneaky NBN 50 as well). The higher speed tiers that cost less than $50 per month do so because of timed discounts. Most of these plans will stay below $50 a month for the first 6 months and then the price will jump up to around $60-$65 per month instead.
Luckily, almost every plan these days is entirely contract free, so once the discount expires you can simply pick another provider from the list. And don’t worry, switching NBN providers is actually super easy - it usually only takes a few clicks and maybe an hour before you’re officially with your new ISP.
NBN plans under $60
If you’re willing to stretch your budget a bit further, you’ll get plenty more NBN 50 options to choose from. Similar to plans under $50, plans sitting below $60 per month for NBN 50 generally do so because of promotional discounts. After the promo period is up you’ll pay between $70 to $80 per month. But don’t panic! Likewise, these plans are generally contract-free so you can pick a new provider once the discount runs out.
