NBN evening speeds putting a bummer on your summer?

WhistleOut Team

Last updated 18 December 2018

According to the latest report from AlphaBeta, NBN data use is set to surge this summer by more than 30% as everyone uses the holidays to get their binge on.

But is your NBN plan up to the task? If you've noticed that your NBN slows down in the evening, it could be that your NBN provider's plans are prone congestion. And that's hardly likely to improve as everyone in your neighbourhood jumps onto Netflix over the break.

Fortunately, there's a solution. Some NBN providers are more prone to congestion than others. And many publish the typical evening speeds their customers experience.

At WhistleOut, we track the advertised evening speeds of 34 providers. These are the ones we've found are the fastest. Is your provider on the list? If not, it might be time to think about making a switch.

The fastest plans with Standard Plus (NBN 50) evening speeds

Selected from plans listed in the WhistleOut search engine.

Maximum speed: 50Mbps

Top evening speeds*:

Dodo - 47Mbps
iPrimus - 47Mbps
Telstra - 46.29Mbps
More Telecom - 46Mbps
Southern Phone - 46Mbps
Optus - 45.4Mbps
Aussie Broadband - 45Mbps
Kogan Internet - 45Mbps

As you can see, there's very little between the top providers offering fast evening speeds on NBN 50 plans. We think these are all great results and that most users would find it difficult to tell the difference.

Who should choose an NBN Standard Plus Evening Speed plan? These plans are a good option for families. You'll have enough speed to ensure everyone can use the internet at the same time, without any fights breaking out over how long YouTube is taking to buffer.

The fastest plans with Premium (NBN 100) evening speeds

Selected from plans listed in the WhistleOut search engine.

Maximum speed: 100Mbps

Top evening speeds*:

Telstra - 92.27Mbps
Aussie Broadband - 90Mbps
More Telecom - 90Mbps
Kogan Internet - 83Mbps
Exetel - 83Mbps
MyRepublic - 83Mbps

As you can see, there's a bit of a gap between the top three and those below. While an evening speed of 90Mbps or above on an NBN Premium plan is definitely preferable, speeds in the mid 80s are still pretty good and should be enough to satisfy all but the most demanding users.

Who should choose an NBN Premium Evening Speed plan? NBN 100 plans are the best bet for large households and anyone who regularly downloads or uploads large files. Games will download at breakneck speed and everyone from the kids to grandma can binge different shows on Netflix, all at the same time.

Not that Telstra does not sell NBN 100 speeds as a stand-alone plan. You will need to purchase a Telstra NBN 50 plan, plus a $30 speed boost.

The fastest plans with Standard (NBN 25) evening speeds

Selected from plans listed in the WhistleOut search engine.

Maximum speed: 25Mbps

Top evening speeds*:

Dodo - 24Mbps
Telstra - 23.34Mbps
Aussie Broadband - 23Mbps
More Telecom - 23Mbps
Kogan Internet - 23Mbps
Vodafone - 23Mbps
Exetel - 23 Mbps
Flip TV - 21.2Mbps
Tangerine Telecom - 21Mbps
iiNet - 20.4Mbps

Typical evening speeds of 20Mbps or above are a great result for plans on this speed tier. And given there's less than 4Mbps difference between the top providers, there shouldn't be a huge "real world" difference between any of these.

Who should choose an NBN Standard Evening Speed plan? NBN 25 plans are better suited to one or two person households. There's not much you can do online that needs a faster speed than NBN 25, but you may notice slower speeds if multiple people are using your connection at once.
