Black Bag

Brodie's brief: Come Spy With Me
Brodie's rating:
Steven Soderbergh is an incredibly prolific director but if you're going to watch anything he's made in the last few years, make it Black Bag. When NCSC counterintelligence agent George Woodhouse (Fassbender) is tasked with identifying a mole from a shortlist of his closest colleagues. One of those colleagues happens to be his own wife, Kathryn (Blanchett).
Their superior, Arthur Stieglitz (Brosnan), has given Woodhouse one week to identify the person who leaked the top-secret 'Severus' software program. In order to catch the traitor,, Woodhouse throws a dinner party with the suspects. When the wine starts to flow, the colleagues start to reveal more secrets than Woodhouse was mining for.
It's a tense and tight 90-minute thriller with an extremely satisfying ending.

Dangerous Animals

Nathan's notes: A unique serial killer story with plenty of bite
Nathan's rating:
Australia is in something of a renaissance for horror movies, with crowd-screamers like Together, Bring Her Back (stream on Prime Video), and Late Night with the Devil (stream on Netflix or Beamafilm). And now you can add Dangerous Animals to that list. Splice one part Wolf Creek (stream on Stan) with one part Jaws (also on Binge), then add in a frequently unhinged but consistently entertaining performance from Jai Courtney as the big bad, and you're all set for what you get. Tucker (Courtney) runs a shark cage experience on the Gold Coast and, given his tastes, it's unsurprising that he prefers transient customers who don't have local family. While Tucker is used to being in control of his weaponised shark killings, his routine is put to the test when he kidnaps American drifter Zephyr (Hassie Harrison). If "weaponised shark killings" reads like a B-film description, you'd be half right. But Dangerous Animals is at its best for most of its runtime when it takes the subject matter seriously.
Director: Sean Byrne | Cast: Jai Courtney, Hassie Harrison, Josh Heuston | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Psychological thriller

The Great Escape

Nathan's notes: An escape so great their captors did Nazi that coming
Nathan's rating:
There are war movies, and then there are World War II movies. While war movies set in different eras vary in quality (like most genres), the 20th century is home to (dirty) dozens of classics. And The Great Escape is arguably at the top of that pile. With an ensemble cast of screen legends, The Great Escape presents an epic war tale away from the frontlines and focused, instead, on prisoners of war. But this ragtag group aren't just regular prisoners; they're the best of the best escapists, imprisoned in a place with one extremely compelling freedom deterrent: escapees will be shot. What ensues is an elaborate and brilliant escape plan with varying degrees of success. The Great Escape is the kind of movie that cinema screens were built for, with excellent performances, lots of humour and heart, all the while not shying away of the harsh realities of war.
Director: John Sturges | Cast: Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, James Garner | Language: English | Rating: PG
Genre: War thriller

Hot Fuzz

Jacqui's gist: British humour at its best - Hot Fuzz is Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's comedy take on the cop movie.
Jacqui's rating:
When London's best cop Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is transferred to the sleepy town of Sandford, he doesn't expect to see a lot of action. He's wrong.
Brought to you by the team behind Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz is more than just a spoof, it's a genuinely thrilling ride complete with mystery, murder and the mother of all action show-downs. It's co-written and directed by Edgar Wright who's known for his comic-book style directing, clever dialogue and innovative take on genres. Wright, Pegg and Frost are all movie nerds and Hot Fuzz is full of homage and cameos (including Peter Jackson and Cate Blanchett) that film buffs will love spotting. Even if you don't like cop movies, you'll love Hot Fuzz - Jacqui Dent

Watch TrailerScream

Alex's analysis: This self-aware slasher expertly subverts the horror genre without sacrificing scares.
Alex's rating:
Directed
by horror master Wes Craven, Scream skewers and subverts horror tropes and
clichés while still being a thrilling slasher in itself. Set in a small
Californian town, high school student Sidney Prescot becomes the target of a
horror-loving serial killer. To survive, Sidney and her friends turn to the
"rules" of the genre. While Scream is a little tame by modern
standards, this sinister satire is a must-watch for any horror fan - Alex

Most Karate Kid movies

Nathan's notes: A fly swatter would have been easier.
Nathan's rating:
The Cobra Kai sensation may be exclusive to Netflix, but if you want a whole lot of the Karate Kid series that spawned it, you want a Binge subscription. Full disclosure: you won't get the derided The Next Karate Kid (sorry, Hillary Swank), but you can find that on Netflix if you're a series completionist. Swanky disclaimer aside, you get the iconic original (The Karate Kid), its solid sequel (Part II), and the shakier trilogy conclusion (Part III).
Depending on how you feel about it, either as a bonus or a crane kick to the face, Binge also has The Karate Kid reboot from 2010. Once standalone, that Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith-led flick is now part of the universe thanks to the 2025 release of Karate Kid: Legends (which is only available as a digital purchase through services like Apple TV at the time of writing). - Nathan Lawrence

How to Train Your Dragon

Jacqui's gist: Toothless the Dragon is the real star of this movie. And I suppose the humans are okay too.
Jacqui's rating:
There's usually something kind of corny about dragons. I've never much liked them but I love the dragons in this movie. The animators of How to Train Your Dragon have brought a lifelike authenticity to these fantasy creatures that is rarely seen in film. You will come out of this movie in love with Toothless the Dragon and inspired by his Viking friends. Beyond the captivating creatures, How to Train Your Dragon is a funny and thoughtful story about learning to see a friend where others see a fearsome beast - Jacqui Dent

Kelly's Heroes

Nathan's notes: Imagine Fury but much funnier
Nathan's rating:
Older movies from the early 2000s are great. And there are plenty of classics from the '80s and '90s. But Binge is streaming one of the best World War II movies of the 1970s, which is saying something in a decade with some fantastic war flicks. Kelly's Heroes does things a little differently from other war movies, splicing the grounded backdrop of World War II with a larger-than-life heist plot. Apparently it's based on a true story, though, which makes it even wilder.
Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles and Donald Sutherland lead a charismatic ensemble cast of movie legends. Their off-the-books mission: get in behind enemy lines to nab a cache of gold bars before their comrades arrive. What ensues is a heist like no other, with great action and lots of laughs in a different-but-incredible World War II flick. - Nathan Lawrence

Knives Out

Alex's analysis: A gloriously fun take on the whodunit genre
Alex's rating:
After the apparent suicide of a wealthy 85 year old mystery novelist, private detective Benoit Blanc - played by Daniel Craig - is called in to investigate. Equal parts murder mystery and dysfunctional family drama, Knives Out is a laugh out loud hilarious take on a classic genre that both embraces and subverts its tropes. Just try not to enjoy this wild ride - Alex Choros

The Mummy

Jacqui's gist: Brendan Fraser alone should be enough to sell you on this movie. The action, laughs and horror capers are just an amazing added bonus.
Jacqui's rating:
If you haven't watched The Mummy yet, you've got to get onto that. It's got Brendan Fraser. It's got Rachel Weisz. It's got monsters, adventure, a villain who looks exactly like the main guy from Aqua, and more sharp lines than you can shake a stick at. Sure, it may be light on historical or even biological accuracy. But if you're the type of person who'd choose flesh-eating scarab beetles over 'reality', this movie is for you - Jacqui Dent
Director: Stephen Sommers | Cast: Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Oded Fehr | Language: English | Rating: M

Inglourious Basterds

Jacqui's gist: One of the most satisfying World War II movies ever made.
Jacqui's rating:
In
one of Quentin Tarantino's finest features, Brad Pitt leads a team of guerrilla
soldiers behind enemy lines during World War II. Their one mission: to kill
Nazis. Or more specifically, to terrify Nazis by brutally killing as many as
possible. The "Basterds" are good at what they do and eventually
graduate from persecuting Hitler's troops to coming after the man himself.
Revenge has never been so sweet - Jacqui Dent

The Road to El Dorado

Jacqui's gist: This rapscallion adventure is an oldie but a goodie.
Jacqui's rating:
A delightful comedy about two Spanish con artists trying to hustle Aztecs out of their gold. The Road to El Dorado didn't smash the box-office on its release in 2000 but this movie has gathered a cult following thanks to its excellent wit, charm and the loveable thieves played by Kevin Kline and Sir Kenneth Branagh (if you please). It's even got an Elton John soundtrack. Watch for a tonne of swindling fun - Jacqui Dent
Director: Bibo Bergeron, Jeffrey Katzenburg, Don Paul | Language: English | Rating: G
