Amazon has announced a new Prime Video Ultra tier in the US, restricting regular customers from accessing 4K content. The Ultra tier effectively replaces the ad-free tier, but with a few more caveats and more changes to the standard Prime Video subscription. Initially, Amazon is launching the Ultra tier exclusively in the US. So Australian subscribers won’t be impacted for the time being.
What is Amazon Prime Video Ultra?
From April 10, Amazon Prime Video subscribers in the United States will have the option to pay an additional US$4.99 per month on top of their regular Prime subscription (US$14.99 per month) for Amazon Prime Video Ultra. The new tier offers ad-free 4K streaming on up to five devices at once, and up to 100 downloads for offline viewing. Ultra subscribers also get premium spatial sound with Dolby Atmos, so long as they’ve got the right hardware to support it.
Now you may be thinking, “Hang on, I’ve already got 4K streaming with Amazon Prime Video”, and you would be 100% correct. 4K isn’t a new Prime Video feature; it’s just now being locked behind a more expensive tier, much like ad-free streaming was back in 2023. Before that, all Prime Video customers recieved ad-free 4K streaming at no extra cost.
Here in Australia, Amazon Prime Video launched in December 2016 for $5.99 per month. Today, it costs $9.99 per month with ads or $12.99 per month without ads. Given that the ad-free add-on costs the same in the US and Australia, it’s fairly safe to assume that the 4K Ultra tier would also increase to $5 extra per month if it were to launch in Australia, which could bring your monthly bill up to $14.99 per monthFrom April 10, Amazon Prime Video subscribers in the United States will have the
