Netflix mobile app - Stranger Things

During an earnings call this week, co-CEO Greg Peters confirmed that the streaming giant would be overhauling the Netflix mobile app’s user interface this year in a similar fashion to last year’s TV app refresh. Included in the redesign will be a TikTok-style vertical feed for sharing clips from shows and video podcasts, which Netflix has recently thrown its weight behind.

When asked why vertical videos aren’t a higher priority for Netflix, Greg Peters confirmed that the company had been testing a vertical video feed in the mobile app for several months already and that the feature would be a focus in the broader mobile app upgrade coming in 2026.

“Just as you've seen us do with the new TV UI, we're working on a new mobile UI that will better serve the expansion of our business over the decade to come. We're gonna roll this out later in 2026. And just like our TV UI, it then becomes a starting point. It becomes a platform for us to continue to iterate, test, evolve, and improve our offerings…We got more vertical video coming for you.”

Recently, Netflix invested heavily in a stack of video podcasts from the Ringer network, Barstool Sports and iHeartMedia in an aggressive play to snatch viewing hours from YouTube. It also announced two original video podcasts from comedian Pete Davidson and ex-NFL star Michael Irvin.

Even though there’s no mention of Disney in the Netflix earnings call, the renewed focus on vertical video comes hot on the heels of Disney’s own plans to add vertical videos to the Disney Plus app after a successful period testing the feature on the ESPN app. One thing that both streamers agree on, however, is that Meta’s Instagram Reels is a genuine threat when it comes to user engagement.

While there’s no firm date, the Netflix mobile app redesign is set to roll out later this year.
