Disney Plus and its lackey Hulu have announced plans to livestream some of the USA’s biggest music festivals to the rest of the world this year, giving Australians (who pay for Disney Plus) the opportunity to witness legendary events like Lollapalooza at the same time as the rest of the world.
Previously exclusive to the US, Disney Plus will begin livestreaming Live Nation festivals globally this year, starting with Bonnaroo in June, followed by Lollapalooza in July and the Austin City Limits Music Festival in October.
There’s a huge Aussie contingent performing across all three festivals. Ninijirachi, Amyl and the Sniffers, Tash Sultana, Empire of the Sun, Spacey Jane, The Chats and more will make an appearance at one (or more) of the three festivals being livestreamed on Disney Plus.
The classic farm festival Bonnaroo is held in Manchester, Tennessee and runs from Friday, June 12 to Monday, June 15. This year, Skrillex, Four Tet, Vince Staples and Spiritual Cramp headline the opening night on Friday (AEST), while The Strokes, Turnstile, Teddy Swims, Noah Kahan, Role Model and Kesha are amongst the headliners for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Lollapalooza kicks off at Grant Park, Chicago, on Friday, July 31 (AEST). It runs over the weekend, wrapping up on Monday, August 3. Lorde and John Summit headline the opening night, while Charli xcx,The Smashing Pumpkins, Oliva Dean, Jennie, Tate McRae and The XX take the lead for the rest of the weekend.
Later in the year, Austin City Limits Music Festival will take place in Zilker Park in Austin, Texas, from Saturday, October 3 to Monday, October 5. A lot of the same names are headlining, including Charli xcx and Skrillex on Saturday (AEST), Rufus Du Sol and Lorde on Sunday, and The XX and Twenty One Pilots on Monday.
How much does Disney Plus cost in Australia?
Disney Plus recently got a price hike in Australia, increasing the Standard and Premium plans to $17.99 and $24.99 per month. At the same time, Disney introduced a cheaper ad-supported tier for $10 per month that gets you almost all the same features of Standard (HD 1080p streaming on two devices) but with ad breaks and no downloads for offline viewing. It's not exactly clear how ad breaks will work during an all-day livestream of any of the festivals mentioned above.
