Apple TV subscribers can finally cast their favourite TV shows and movies from a mobile device to a television or display using Google Cast, but only if they’re using an Android device.
The inability to cast Apple TV from your phone or tablet has been a problem ever since Google TV and Android TV became the operating systems of choice for most smart televisions. Unfortunately, iPhone and iPad users don’t get the same update. Google Cast support is exclusive to the Google Play version of the Apple TV app.
The Apple TV 4K streaming device remains the only way iPhone and iPad users can cast content to a television.
If you're using the Apple TV app on an Android smartphone or tablet (such as a Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel), your first step is to ensure the Apple TV app is up to date. If it hasn't updated automatically, you can do it manually by heading to the Google Play Store, clicking on your profile icon in the top-right corner and selecting 'Manage apps and device'. From there, you will see a section titled 'Updates Available'. If the Apple TV app appears in that list, select 'Update', or 'Update All' to update all your apps.
Now that your Apple TV app is up to date, double-check that you're connected to the same WiFi network as the device you want to cast to (e.g., your smart TV). Once that's confirmed, open up the Apple TV app and select the TV show or movie you want to play. Now, tap the Cast button in the top-right corner of the screen and select your TV model from the list of devices.
It’s interesting timing, considering Netflix just started removing Google Cast support from mobile devices, much to the frustration of users. Netflix is in a better position than most to remove the feature, considering just about every smart television already has a dedicated Netflix button. But the fact remains that a lot of people simply prefer navigating streaming apps from a smartphone or tablet, rather than a clunky smart TV remote.
How much does Apple TV cost?
Apple TV offers a single subscription option. For $15.99 per month, you can watch Apple TV original TV shows and movies in 4K/HDR on six different devices (on the same Family account). It also comes with a seven-day free trial so you can give it a run for a week without paying anything.
If you're an Apple power user, you can save a decent chunk of change by signing up for Apple One. Apple One gives you Apple TV, Apple Music and Apple Music (combined value of $40.46 per month) for $24.99 per month.
There are even more ways to save on Apple services if you know where to look.
