Amazon today announced two new streaming sticks for the Australian market: the Fire TV Stick 4K and standard Fire TV Stick. The pair are the first new streaming options Amazon has brought to Australia since the Fire TV Stick Basic back in 2017.
As the name might suggest, the Fire TV Stick 4K is capable of streaming 4K video, making it the retail giant's first 4K-ready video device to launch locally. Much like the new Chromecast, the Fire TV Stick 4K is made up of two components - a dongle you plug into a spare HDMI port on your TV and a remote. The remote now features an Alexa button to help you find content with your voice, and can also be used to control compatible TVs and sound bars.
In addition to supporting 4K, the Fire TV Stick 4K is also ready for Dolby Vision, HDR 10, HDR 10+, and Dolby Atmos content.
The Fire TV Stick 4K is compatible with streaming services including Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Stan, Disney+, SBS On Demand, 10play, 9now, and 7plus. As it stands, Binge is a major omission.
Amazon is taking pre-orders for the Fire TV Stick 4K now ahead of an April 21 release date. It will set you back $99.
If you don't care for 4K, the standard Fire TV Stick will set you back $79. It is only capable of outputting in HD, and lacks support for Dolby Vision, HDR 10, and HDR 10+. Otherwise, the Fire TV Stick 4K and standard Fire TV Stick are all but identical.
