If you've been burned by subpar Disney sequels (like Inside Out 2) and let down by promising original movies (sorry, Elio), you couldn't be blamed for missing out on Hoppers, but the truth is, Hoppers is easily the funniest and most original Disney Pixar film in years. If you didn't catch it on the big screen, you'll get the chance to watch it next month at home when Hoppers releases on Disney Plus.
How to watch Hoppers at home in Australia
Hoppers got a digital release on services like Apple TV back in April (at the premium rental/purchase price), just one month after its theatrical release. But now Hoppers is making the leap to Disney Plus and will be available to subscribers on Wednesday, June 17.
Disney Plus plans are available in three flavours: Standard with Ads is the cheapest, getting you ad-supported HD streaming on two devices for $9.99 per month. If you want to go ad-free, Disney Plus Standard also gets you HD streaming on two devices for $17.99 per month, while Premium gets you ad-free 4K streaming on up to four devices for $24.99 per month. It's one of the more expensive streaming services in Australia, but there are a few ways to save on your monthly spend, like signing up for a year upfront if you're fully onboard with what Disney delivers.
If you'd prefer to watch Hoppers without a subscription, you can buy or rent it digitally through services like Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video and Google Play. At the time of writing, those services will still charge you a premium price of $24.99 to rent or $29.99 to purchase. Those prices tend to go down significantly once the movie is available to stream on-demand so we recommend waiting until June 17, either way.
What is Hoppers about?
To be honest, the initial trailer for Hoppers didn't do the film much justice. On the surface, it's a film about how a fledgling teenage eco-terrorist, Mabel (Curda), stumbles upon a technology that transfers her consciousness into a robotic beaver, granting her the ability to communicate with real animals. And while that's true, it's the heart and humour supporting that premise that make it worth watching.
When Mabel's beloved grandmother passes, the angsty teen makes herself the ward of the idyllic forest glade where they spent their days together. So when the greedy mayor of Beaverton (Hamm) decides to build a freeway straight through the glade, Mabel goes to great lengths to protect the sanctity of the ecological oasis. When going by the book and petitioning the Beaverton community doesn't work out, Mabel turns to her college professor, Dr Sam Fairfax, who has been perfecting the "H.O.P.P.E.R.S" technology in secret.
Mabel undergoes the hopping process only to learn that the animal kingdom in her beloved forest glade has its own set of rules and political infighting. With the help of the beaver monarch, King George (Bobby Moynihan), Mabel rallies the wildlife to save the glade.
