You can get a brand new tele for a couple of hundred bucks these days. But the true cost of a TV starts to add up when you stack subscriptions: Netflix, Stan, Prime Video, and the list of premium streaming services goes on. Mercifully, there are more free streaming services in Australia than just the digital equivalents of the free-to-air channels.
For instance, you can get Beamafilm, Kanopy, and Hoopla with a participating library membership. But you don't even need a library membership to stream Brollie or Tubi for free. And if you want to know about all things Tubi, you've come to the right place.
What is Tubi?
Just because Tubi is free, doesn't mean it has a seriously stunted library. In fact, Tubi claims to have a whopping 275,000 licensed movies and TV episodes. Tubi is also home to 300+ originals. Globally, Tubi attracts more than 97 million monthly viewers. Because Tubi is free, it's what's called an advertising-based video on demand (AVOD) service.
Outside of Australia, Tubi is also accessible to streaming users in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Latin America, and the UK. Creating a free account is as simple as adding your name, a password, an email address, and your date of birth. After that, keep an eye out for the verification email, and you're good to stream.

How much does Tubi cost in Australia?
Tubi doesn't cost a cent in Australia, or anywhere else in the world for that matter. But don't take our word for Tubi's free-ness. According to the Tubi Help Centre, "Tubi is a 100% free, 100% legal streaming service. Our app is free to install, and all of our content is always free to watch." Bottom line: don't expect Tubi to charge; in fact, it's been happily not charging in Australia since 2019.
As an AVOD service, the 'cost' of watching Tubi is the extra time it takes to get through a movie or episode because of ads. While ads don't always play at the start of content, you can expect 90-second ad breaks throughout movies or TV shows. If ads do play at the start of something on Tubi, expect around 45 seconds of them. If you watch a movie, you can expect ads every 15 minutes or so.
What can I watch on Tubi in Australia?
Tubi has thousands of movies and TV shows to choose from. Here are some examples of what was popular on Tubi at the time of writing.

Popular Tubi TV shows
- Cops (1989, five seasons)
- Cops Reloaded (2013, one season)

How can I watch Tubi?

- Amazon Fire Stick and Fire TV
- Android phones and tablets
- Android TV
- Apple TV
- Hisense VIDAA TV
- iOS phones and tablets
- PlayStation 4
- Roku
- Samsung TV
- Sony Android TV
- Web browsers
Note that Telstra TV was still listed as a supported device in the Tubi Help Centre even though it's been discontinued in Australia.
Best internet plans for Tubi
According to Tubi, you need at least 1Mbps of download speed to stream videos. But Tubi recommends at least 4Mbps per video. From our testing, Tubi movies and TV shows don't go beyond 720p resolution, though the bitrates did vary between content (though never above 4Mbps).
We also tested Tubi streaming of four videos simultaneously on the same account without any issues. If you want to stream to four devices, you'll need at least 16Mbps of download speed. While you could get away with an NBN 25 plan to stream Tubi, we recommend most homes start with at least NBN 50 for the extra breathing space when it comes to sharing download speeds across devices.

Tubi FAQs
Does Tubi have a free trial in Australia?
No, there's no free trial for Tubi in Australia because it's a free streaming service. You don't even have to sign up for an account to start streaming. You only need to sign up with an email address and password if you want save your progress and continue watching later.
What features does Tubi have?
Tubi's layout will be familiar to anyone who's used a streaming service in recent years. Tubi has a carousel of promoted content at the top of your browser or app. Scroll down for recommended flicks and popular picks before getting into specific genres and other content categories. The more you scroll, the more content categories will appear.
You can add Tubi TV shows and movies to your list to watch later, then access them from the 'My Stuff' section. Jump to respective views for movies and TV shows or discover new content via the search bar. Tubi also lets you browse by popularity, genres, collections, and networks.

Does Tubi have ads?
Yes, Tubi is able to offer free streaming because its content has ads. Ads aren't always presented at the front of content but, the longer the content, the more ad breaks you can expect (from around 45 seconds to 90 seconds).

Tubi is a free service, so you shouldn't need to share your password. There's nothing I could find that says Tubi is against password sharing, though, and my streaming tests worked across multiple movies and devices, so share away.
Is Tubi legal in Australia?
Yes, Tubi is a legal streaming service in Australia. While free, Tubi makes its money by putting ads in its movies and TV shows.
What is the downside of using Tubi?
The main downside of Tubi is its lengthy and frequent ad breaks. Outside of that, you've got a free streaming service with a good selection of movies and TV shows.
