We're truly living in a golden age of TV: there are just so many good shows out there. As great as this is, there's a downside - it's really hard to pick what to watch. If you've got a subscription to Stan and are a little lost, here are our top picks for the best shows you should binge on next.
RuPaul's Drag Race

Brodie's blurb: RuPaul's Drag Race isn't your typical reality show; it's a viciously competitive series that's dressed to kill
Brodie's rating:
One of the most entertaining reality / competition television shows in history, a lesson in reading, lip-syncing and hustling, RuPaul's Drag Race has amassed a monumental following in its 11-season run, as well as a number of spin-offs (all available on Stan) - Brodie Fogg
Director: Nick Murray | Language: English | Rating: MA15+ | Genre: Drag queen reality TV
Memory of a Killer

Christie's critique: McDreamy goes from saving lives to taking them in this psychological drama. But will his two lives intersect as his memory becomes his biggest opponent.
Christie's rating:
Patrick Dempsey returns to our screens as Angelo, a seemingly well-adjusted silver fox family man. But he has a secret, he's a hitman by trade and his family have no idea. But when Angelo starts developing early symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease, his two live threaten to unravel thus putting those he loves in mortal peril. - Christie Graham
Creators: Tracey Malone, Ed Whitmore | Cast: Patrick Dempsey, Richard Harmon, Odeya Rush, Peter Gadiot, Daniel David Stewart | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
| Genre: Dystopian sci-fi
Luther

Jacqui's gist: A deliciously dark crime about a troubled cop and his fascination/friendship with a psychopath.
Jacqui's rating:
John Luther is a cop who doesn't play by the rules. He's mad, bad and dangerous to know, especially once he meets Alice. She's a psychopath and a killer but he can't prove it. And maybe doesn't want to - there's chemistry between them that is frankly electrifying on screen. But as Alice's obsession with Luther grows deeper, things get dangerous for him and the people around him. And while all this is going on, he also has to solve some pretty horrific and totally unrelated murders. Luther is one of the best shows to come out of the BBC - Jacqui Dent
Creator: Neil Cross | Cast: Idris Elba, Ruth Wilson, Indira Varma | Language: English
| Rating: MA15+ | Genre: Gritty crime
Parks and Recreation

Tara's take: If you loved The Office and like your comedy with lots of heart, Parks and Recreation is mandatory viewing.
Tara's rating:
Former Saturday Night Live star Amy Poehler is perfectly cast as Leslie Knope, the eternally hopeful, politically ambitious small-town government employee with dreams of building a park in a (literal) pit. While the short first season is a little hit-or-miss, the show really hits its stride from the second season onward, solidifying its main cast and, eventually, seeing Leslie move beyond the simple dream of park-building to something more.
With an abundance of one-liners and running jokes, and an endearing ensemble cast, there’s plenty to love about Parks and Recreation. Treat yo’self - Tara Donnelly
Creators: Greg Daniels, Michael Schur | Cast: Amy Poehler, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Aziz Ansarie | Language: English | Rating: M | Genre: Irreverent office comedy

Anula's notions: A intimate look at some horrible people`ff
Anula's rating:
Mark (David Mitchell) and Jeremy (Robert Webb) are quite frankly not good people. While they transition from uni to the real world the roommates have taken drastically different paths. Jeremy is trying his best to not work while Mark has landed a stable office job - and this stability has gone to his head.
Despite their differences, they both have one thing in common - they’re just the worst. Peep Show is the ultimate cringe. The pair try, and fail, and fail, and try, and give up, and make it all worse again somehow. Some parts are frustratingly realistic in their desperation while others will leave you wondering what kind of people would act this way.
It’s hard to watch and yet I can’t turn away. - Anula Wiwatowska
Creators: Jesse Armstrong, Sam Bain, Andrew O'Connor | Cast: David Mitchell, Robert Webb, Matt King, Paterson Joseph, Olivia Colman | Language: English | Rating: MA 15+ | Genre: Cringe-com
Alone

Christie's critique: Drop ten people in a harsh, unforgiving arena where the real challenger is mother nature and watch 'em squirm.
Christie's rating:
Alone is a fantastic survivalist reality show with a very simple concept. Ten people must compete to be the last one left when dropped into the wilderness with just ten items for survival. They must build their own shelters, forage and hunt for their own food, battle the elements and outlast each other (and themselves) all alone for a life-changing cash prize. - Christie Graham
Director: Jeff Kay | Cast: Nicole Apelian, Sam Larson, Brooke Wipple, Jesse Bosdell, Brad Richardson, Carleigh Fairchild, Dave Nessia, | Language: English
| Rating: M | Genre: Survivalist reality game show
The Handmaid's Tale

Jacqui's gist: This disturbing vision of a not-too-distant future hits way too close to home.
Jacqui's rating:
In the not-too-distant future, Americans live under a brutal regime run by religious extremists. Women have no rights and, with birth rates dropping due to an unnamed natural disaster, those few who remain fertile are forced to bear children to the elite men of the new order. Based on the acclaimed novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale is making waves around the world thanks to Elizabeth Moss's powerful performance and the show's timely commentary on sexual assault and women's reproductive rights - Jacqui Dent
Creator: Bruce Miller | Cast: Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, Madeline Brewer | Language: English | Rating: MA15+ | Genre: Dystopian sci-fi
Black Snow

Nathan's notes: An Aussie spin on a Jessica Fletcher-like investigation of cold murder cases
Nathan's rating:
Aussie movie and TV exports are seemingly focused on two genres: horror and murder mysteries. And if you like your murder mysteries played out over an entire season, showcasing cases that clash with a tortured investigator, you should absolutely check out Black Snow Think a darker, Aussie version of Netflix's Dept Q., and you'll get the idea.
Each season focuses on a separate cold case murder, in a Reacher-like setup where most of the supporting cast changes, but the protagonist stays the same. James Cormack (Travis Fimmel) is this show's tortured detective who loses himself in his work to avoid dealing with his own ghosts. In season one, the opening of a high school time capsule unearths new evidence of an improperly investigated murder that has massive implications for a small Queensland community. Season two hits closer to home as Cormack digs into the mysterious disappearance of a young woman on her 21st birthday. Each mystery will keep you guessing at who's innocent, who's guilty, and who's trickier to classify in a binary way.
Creator: Lucas Taylor, Huna Amweero, Beatrix Christian | | Cast: Travis Fimmel, Renee Lim, Jemmason Power | Language: English | Rating: MA15+ | Genre: Crime thriller
Killing Eve

Jacqui's gist: Killing Eve is the fun, sexy, terrifying lesbian assassin TV show you didn't know was missing from your life.
Jacqui's rating:
Villanelle has her dream job - killing people for money. She loves what she does and she's good at it. But when Eve Polastri from MI6 starts to follow her trail, Villanelle realises there's something missing from her life. And that something is Eve. What follows is a wild game of cat-and-mouse as the two women hunt each other down. Will they catch each other? Seduce each other? Or will Villanelle simply kill everyone Eve has ever loved? Honestly, it's anyone's guess - Jacqui Dent
Creator: Phoebe Waller-Bridge | Cast: Sandra Oh, Jodie Conner, Fiona Shaw, Darren Boyd, Owen McDonnell | Language: English | Rating: MA15+ | Genre: Crazy thriller
Hannibal

Tara's take: A blood-soaked re-imaging of the Hannibal Lector story, with plenty of plot twists and an exceptional cast.
Tara's rating:
Thomas Harris’ iconic literary cannibal, Hannibal Lector, makes another return to the screen – and it’s not for the faint of heart (or weak of stomach). Co-scripted by Harris himself, the series stars Mads Mikkelsen in the title role, portraying a pre-capture Dr. Lector as he works with a brilliant but troubled young FBI lecturer to profile and track down serial killers.
Chronicling some of the events of the novels Red Dragon through to Hannibal, the series works best if you disregard what you already know about Lector and appreciate Mikkelsen'svicious, yet strangely humanising, take on one of cinema’s favourite villains. Gory, shocking, and fast-paced - Tara Donnelly
Creator: Bryan Fuller | Cast: Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy, Caroline Dhavernas, Laurence Fishburne | Language: English | Rating: R18+ | Genre: Crime thriller
The Assassin

Nathan's notes: The only thing worse than an estranged relationship with your mother is when she's a world-class assassin
Nathan's rating:
If you're a fan of The Day of the Jackal TV series (available on Binge and Foxtel Now), there's a good chance The Assassin will be for you, and it has more in common than the same starting word. After all, both TV series focus on world-class assassins. But while the titular Jackal is making a killing at the height of his career, the assassin in question in, uh, The Assassin is retired and enjoying the spoils of her career, living large on a Greek island. You'd think an ex-assassin would be more organised, but Julie (Keeley Hawes) is particularly frazzled, despite functionally operating on 'island time'. Why? Her estranged son Edward (Freddie Highmore) is coming to visit, and she's eager to make a positive impression.
As you might expect, Julie's retirement plans go haywire when her past catches up with her. And while she may be retired, she's handily not rusty when it comes to the art of killing. The action scenes are impressive, the drama compelling, and there's plenty of laughs (plus some killer twists) to keep you coming back for more.
Creator: Harry Williams, Jack Williams | Cast: Keeley Hawes, Freddie Highmore, Shalom Brune-Franklin | Language: English | Rating: MA15+ | Genre: Thriller
Broad City

Jacqui's gist: Two 20-somethings talking crap and getting up to weird adventures in New York.
Jacqui's rating:
It's been hailed as one of the best TV shows of the 2010s. And now that it's over you can cram all five seasons into your eyeballs without having to wait for the next episode like some kind of chump. Strangely compelling, startlingly weird and always hilarious, if Broad City's not on your must-see list, it should be - Jacqui Dent
Creator: Abbi Jacobson, Ilana Glazer | Cast: Abbi Jacobson, Ilana Glazer | Language: English | Rating: MA15+ | Genre: Sit-com
Rutherford Falls

Alex's analysis: A small town reckons with its past
Alex's rating:
Co-created by Michael Schur of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks and Recreations, and The Good Place fame, Rutherford Falls isn't dissimilar to its siblings in terms of tone, but digs a little deeper. The series hones in on the friendship of Nathan Rutherford - a descendent of the titular town's founder - and Reagan Wells - a member of the Minishonka Nation who runs a museum that celebrates her tribe's history. However, when the mayor threatens to remove a statue of Nathan's ancestor, their friendship starts to strain. The series is big on Schur's trademark optimism and antics, but also makes a pronounced effort to engage with Indigenous issues in a meaningful way. A sincere, heartwarming watch - Alex Choros
Creators: Ed Helms, Michael Schur, Sierra Teller Ornelas
| Cast:
Ed Helms, Michael Greyeyes, Jana Schmieding, Jesse Leigh, Dustin Milligan | Language: English
| Rating: M | Genre: Small town comedy
Blackadder

Anula's notions: Rowan Atkinson's pseudohistorical look at Britain's past.
Anula's rating:
Each series of Blackadder follows the adventures and misadventures of Edmund Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson). Set in different time periods, we see Blackadder struggle through the reign of Richard IV, Queen Elizabeth, the late 18th century, and the trenches of The Great War.
Although he's not entirely bright, Edmund holds some authority in each lifetime and works with his trusty servant Baldrick to get through some significant historical events. There's a reason this is ranked as the second-best British sitcom of all time - Anula Wiwatowska
Creator: Rowan Atkinson, Ben Elton, Richard Curtis | Cast: Rowan Atkinson, Tony Robinson, Tim McInnerny, Hugh Laurie | Language: English | Rating: M | Genre: Period comedy
Poker Face

Nathan's notes: Natasha Lyonne's detective work will keep you guessing.
Nathan's rating:
Not to be confused with the Russell Crowe-led Stan Original movie of the same name, Poker Face the Stan Original TV series is the creation of Rian Johnson. He's the writer-director who gave the world the beloved Knives Out flicks, and the extremely divisive The Last Jedi Star Wars sequel. Thankfully, Poker Face is a lot closer to Knives Out than that Star Wars foray, not just in reception but in genre.
Natasha Lyonne stars as the down-on-her-luck Charlie, who has one very special skill: she can tell whenever someone is lying. While not a detective per se, Charlie's gift puts her in positions where she's naturally apt at cracking cases. Of course, it helps that she's also on the run from a shady casino owner, which lets her bounce around in 'mystery of the week'-type adventures episode to episode.
Creator: Rian Johnson | Cast: Natasha Lyonne, Benjamin Bratt, Patti Harrison | Language: English | Rating: MA15+ | Genre: Crime comedy
Younger

Kate's comment: Are you team Charles, or team Josh?
Kate's rating:
Liza is just a regular millennial just trying to keep her head above water in her entry level publishing job. The only problem is, Liza isn’t really a millennial, she’s 40. And no one knows. Not her work bestie, not her boss, and definitely not the two guys she’s interested in, either...
Younger takes a hilarious, sometimes cheesy, but fashionably fun look at one woman’s struggle to re-enter the workforce after raising children, and the lengths she’ll go to getting back into the workforce - and stay there. -Kate Reynolds
Creators: Darren Star | Cast: Sutton Foster, Hilary Duff, Nico Tortorella, Debi Mazar | Language: English | Rating: M | Genre: Comedy
The Great

Anula's notions: It's trash, but it's fun trash.
Anula's rating:
If you enjoyed A Knight's Tale then you will probably like The Great. The style blends modern and era-specific elements together to create a quirky interpretation of the rise of Catherine the Great. Emphasis on the word 'interpretation,' this retelling is not exactly historically accurate but it is entertaining.
Take everything you'd expect from 18th Century Russia aristocracy, add extra vodka, and stir in a good ole fashion coup. - Anula Wiwatowska
Creators: Tony McNamara | Cast: Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox | Language: English | Rating: MA | Genre: Comedy

Love Life

Anula's notions: Relationships are hard man.
Anula's rating:
We follow Darby (Anna Kendrick) through a lifetime of love interests. Always the hopeless and hapless romantic, through the series we see Darby’s priorities shift from romantic to platonic and familial love. - Anula Wiwatowska
Creators: Sam Boyd | Cast: Anna Kendrick, Peter Vack, Zoe Chao, Scoot McNairy | Language: English | Rating: MA 15+ | Genre: Rom-com
The Gloaming

Alex's analysis: An Aussie-made murder mystery that will have you smashing the "play next episode" button until you're finished.
Alex's rating:
When a woman is found murdered, evidence at the crime scene links it an unsolved case from two decades ago. Cut from the same cloth as Twin Peaks, The Gloaming is a whodunit murder mystery that isn't afraid to delve into the realm of the supernatural. The show revels in its unsettling atmosphere, slowly unravelling an intricate plot, clawing its hooks in deeper until you can't look away. While it can be a bit of a slow burn, The Gloaming is gripping to the point where you'll struggle to not binge the entire series in a sitting - Alex Choros
Creator: Victoria Madden | Cast: Emma Booth, Ewen Leslie, Aaron Pedersen, Anthony Phelan, Nicole Chamoun | Language: English | Rating: M | Genre: Murder mystery
The Bold Type

Jacqui's gist: Fun, thoughtful and addictive, The Bold Type is basically the whole package, in a very stylish dress.
Jacqui's rating:
The Bold Type is a comedy drama about three millenials working at a New York fashion magazine. But don't be fooled. This show is everything you would expect it to be, and so much more. And it's all the better for its balance of sexy fun, empowering plotlines and nuanced, timely commentary. On top of all that, it's also inspiring; a refreshingly optimistic take on the political and social issues we all struggle with today. This is a show that will make you think, feel good and maybe even stand up and be bold - Jacqui Dent
Creator: Sarah Watson | Cast: Katie Stevens, Aisha Dee, Meghann Fahy, Same Page, Matt Ward | Language: English | Rating: M | Genre: Journalism dramedy
30 Rock

Jacqui's gist: An essential for fans of Tina Fey and Saturday Night Live.
Jacqui's rating:
30 Rock is ostensibly a TV show about making TV shows. But it's so much more than that. It's a show about dorks. It's a show about life. It's a show about becoming best friends with Alec Baldwin. It's a show about having it all. But most of all, it's a Tina Fey fan's dream. That's right, everyone's favourite Sarah Palin created and starred in 30 Rock, and if that sounds appealing, you must get onto it immediately. Watch it all. Watch it now. Tell your friends. That is all - Jacqui Dent
Creator: Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan | Language: English | Rating: 16+
| Genre: Tina Frey Comedy
Community

Alex's analysis: Going back to school shouldn't be this much fun.
Alex's rating:
Before Rick & Morty had the internet going crazy for Szechuan sauce, Dan Harmon created Community. When disbarred lawyer Jeff Winger is forced to return to community college, he reluctantly falls in with a misfit study group. The series started small, following the ins-and-outs of day-to-day life at school, but ultimately became known for its high-concept episodes that included campus-wide paintball, alternate realities, and countless movie homages.
While the show is brilliantly written, it's elevated to greatest thanks to an ensemble cast including Joel McHale, Donald Glover, Alison Brie, Chevy Chase, and Ken Jeong - Alex Choros
Creator: Dan Harmon | Cast: Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Donald Glover | Language: English | Rating: MA15+ | Genre: Back to school sitcom
Orphan Black

Jacqui's gist: This super smart sci-fi thriller will keep you guessing every step of the way.
Jacqui's rating:
When small-time con artist Sarah witnesses the suicide of a woman who looks exactly like her, she steals her identity in search of a way to make some cash. Instead, she ends up knee-deep in a conspiracy involving clones, mad scientists, religious fanatics and one very psycho killer.
Orphan Black's story twists and turns more times than a double helix and the direction it takes is almost never the one you're expecting. Tatiana Maslany gives multiple incredible performances as an array of clone characters. You will forget that they are all played by one actress. In fact, you may never even notice in the first place - Jacqui Dent
Creator: John Fawcett, Graeme Manson | Cast: Tatiana Maslany, Dylan Bruce, Jordan Gavaris | Language: English | Rating: MA15+ | Genre: Mind-bending sci-fi

Misfits

Jacqui's gist: Five teen criminals get superpowers. Do they use them for the good of humanity? No. No they do not.
Jacqui's rating:
Misfits offers a genuinely original take on the idea of superpowers. These teens are not heroes, and they have no interest in becoming heroes. They just do what everyone would probably do with super powers – use them for their own amusement, and to cover up the occasional murder. Misfits combines hilarious antics with addictive storylines and characters that have a tonne of charisma. It's sometimes lewd, often rude and always completely brilliant. At least for the first two seasons - Jacqui Dent
Creator: Howard Overman | Cast: Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Iwan Rheon, Laura Socha, Antonia Thomas | Language: English | Rating: MA15+ | Genre: Dark superhero comedy
Romper Stomper

Alex's analysis: This timely revival is more than just good drama.
Alex's rating:
Stan's Romper Stomper revival swaps swastikas for southern crosses in an uncomfortable look at the ugliness of Australian racism. Set decades after the controversial 1992 feature that shot Russell Crowe into the limelight, the Romper Stomper miniseries places Muslim Australians firmly in the firing line of Neo Nazi ire.
This time around, the Neo Nazis aren't stereotypical skinheads touting swastika tattoos. They're everyday Australians. Patriots. Hardworking blokes that love their country. It's a far more insidious form of hatred. While occasionally hard to watch, Romper Stomper feels like essential viewing for these trouble times, casting a light on a part of Australian culture that many would prefer to ignore - Alex Choros
Creator: Geoffrey Wright | Cast: Jacqueline McKenzie, Dan Wyllie, Lachy Hulme, Sophie Lowe, David Wenham | Language: English | Rating: MA15+ | Genre: All-too-real crime drama
No Activity

Alex's analysis: Threatesports meets a confiscated bag of crack in this laugh-a-second improv cop comedy.
Alex's rating:
An irreverent unscripted Australian comedy about the peripheral players in a major police sting. No Activity is dark, weird, and laugh out loud funny - Alex Choros
Creator: Trent O'Donnell | Cast: Patrick Brammall, Darren Gilshenan, Genevieve Morris, Harriet Dyer | Language: English | Rating: MA15+ | Genre: Improv comedy
Rake

Alex's analysis: This courtroom dramedy is one of Australia's finest TV shows.
Alex's rating:
Cleaver Green - the show's eponymous rake / general loose unit - is a brilliant yet self-destructive criminal barrister with a chaotic personal life and equally chaotic career. If he's not defending a cannibal, he's falling in love with a sex worker. On top a stellar cast, Rake touts an impressive list of cameo performances including Hugo Weaving, Noah Taylor, Sam Neil, Jacqueline McKenzie, Toni Colette, and Cate Blanchett - Alex Choros
Creators: Peter Duncan, Richard Roxburgh, Charles Waterstreet | Cast: Richard Roxburgh, Matt Day, Russell Dykstra, Kate Box | Language: English | Rating: MA15+ |
Genre: Courtroom dramedy
The Mighty Boosh

Jacqui's gist: The extremely strange adventures of two zookeepers/wannabe musicians.
Jacqui's rating:
If you are now or have ever been a fan or British comedy you really need to put The Mighty Boosh on your list. Howard Moon and Vince Noir are two mismatched friends who inhabit a world of make-shift costumes, bizarre sets and wildly tangential dialogue. Their career as zookeepers and sideline as wannabe musicians take them on magical adventures to the arctic tundra, the wilds of the desert, the other side of death and beyond. It's part stand-up routine, part musical comedy, part way-out surrealist adventure, and all genius - Jacqui Dent
Creators: Noel Fielding, Julian Barratt | Cast: Noel Fielding, Julian Barratt, Michael Fielding, Rich Fulcher | Language: English | Rating: M | Genre: Surreal British comedy
Better Call Saul

Alex's analysis: This slowburning character study is much more than just a prequel.
Alex's rating:
Better Call Saul is a dark character study that documents the unsuccessful yet ambitious James McGill's transformation into Saul Goodman, Breaking Bad's super skeevy attorney. We all know the destination, but this only makes the journey all the more enthralling.
While Better Call Saul is technically a prequel to Breaking Bad, it manages to stand on its own two feet and works as a standalone show. But if you haven't watched Breaking Bad, it's all on Stan too. Watch it - Alex Choros
Creators: Vince Gilligan, Peter Gould | Cast: Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Michael McKean, Rhea Seehorn | Language: English | Rating: M | Genre: Crime drama with a black comedy twist
Sherlock

Jacqui's gist: Benedict Cumberbatch is literally a modern day Sherlock Holmes in the instant cult classic that made him famous. And sexy.
Jacqui's rating:
If you're a fan of the original Sherlock Holmes books, you may be cringing at the idea of a modern day version. But don't. It works. And as well as being a surprisingly faithful modern translation of the original tales, it's also razor-sharp with more clever lines, twists, turns and references than you can shake a stick at. Or more appropriately a deer-stalker hat and pipe?
It's also the TV show that managed to convince the world that Benedict Cumberbatch is sexy. Which in and of itself is a feat. No disrespect to Cumberbatch. Sherlock is worth watching for his performance alone which is so masterful and arresting.
Just don't watch season four. It jumps the shark - Jacqui Dent
Creators: Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffat | Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Una Stubbs, Louise Brealey | Language: English | Rating: M | Genre: Crime
The Office

Anula's notions: If you liked the American Office, you should see where it originated.
Anula's rating:
Everyone at Werham Hogg paper company just wants to get on with their job. Too bad their boss David Brent (Ricky Gervais) can't let a day go by without uninspiring and inappropriate jokes.
Ricky Gervais is known to say "keep them wanting more", and this is exactly what The Office does. Despite only having two seasons, the UK original version inspired nine seasons of the infamous American reboot. The stereotypical office workers of the US version are built off the original cast here. That shows just how much character depth Gervais and co. were able to squeeze into just two immaculate seasons - Anula Wiwatowska
Creator: Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant | Cast: Ricky Gervais, Martin Freeman, Mackenzie Crook, Lucy Davis | Language: English | Rating: PG | Genre: The Office is its own genre
