México 86 (2026)

A little bit of a different one to shake things up; México 86 is a tidy 95min film recounting history-making football but in a very unusual way.
Loosely based on a true story, Martín De La Torre is a man with a near-impossible task — to secure Mexico's bid to host the 1986 World Cup. His unorthodox methods to create history for his country mirror the audacious tactics employed by a Jordan Belfort/Wolf of Wall Street-like character.
This film is a reminder that 'anything can happen' even when the odds are stacked heavily against you.
Director: Gabriel Ripstein | Cast: Diego Luna, Memo Villegas, Davor Tomic
Language: Spanish | Rating: M
Genre: Satirical historical sports dramedy
Available on: Netflix
Ted Lasso (2020-present)

You can't create a watchlist like this without including Ted Lasso. If you're a soccer-fanatic yet haven't seen this series before, essentially it's a story about what would happen if a failing UK soccer club appointed an American football coach to lead them.
The results are both hilarious, heartwarming, gut-wrenching and endlessly entertaining. So much so, Apple TV decided to revive Ted Lasso for a fourth season, which is due to air in early August.

Next Goal Wins (2023)

Next Goal Wins is a sports Taika Waititi masterpiece that somehow flew under the radar for most soccer fans. While we all love an underdog redemption story, be warned, there isn't a lot of redemption to be found here.
This star-studded film remembers the infamously underprepared American Samoa soccer team and their staggering defeat by Australia (31-0) in the 2001 FIFA World Cup. This match made it into the world record books as the largest victory/loss in an international soccer game.
While it sounds like a downer, Next Goal Wins is a light-hearted feel-good underdog story.

Earning himself the nickname Mighty Steel Leg, Sing accepts Fung's offer to coach him and his Shaolin brothers in football.

Bend it Like Beckham

Bend It Like Beckham was a formative film for many young football players back in 2001. The film that essentially launched Keira Knightley's career (after The Phantom Menace but before Love Actually), Bend It Like Beckham is a rewatchable coming-of-age story about a young Punjabi girl, Jesminder "Jess" Bhamra from London who dreams of being a football superstar like her idol, David Beckham.
All these years later, Bend It Like Beckham has aged like a fine wine. There are a few sharp notes around the way it tackles race and sexuality, but overall, it will leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy - and just a touch cynical about David and Victoria Beckham's low-effort cameo.
Bend it Like Beckham is currently streaming on Stan.
Director: Gurinder Chadha | Cast: Parminder Nagra, Keira Knightley, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Anupam Kher
Language: English | Rating: PG
Genre: Coming-of-age football feels
