Update: Superman is now streaming on HBO Max

Superman has landed on HBO Max in Australia a week earlier than expected. That's great news for subscribers because HBO Max is currently the cheapest way to watch Superman at home, with subscriptions starting at $11.99 per month.

Swooping in just a few days after Peacemaker: Season 2 premiered on HBO Max, this year’s Superman landed on digital services in Australia, available to rent or buy for a premium fee. As of this month, it's also available to stream via HBO Max.

What is Superman (2025) about?

The 2025 return of Superman serves as a total reset of the DC cinematic universe; a fresh start that farewells Henry Cavill’s Clark Kent, Ben Affleck’s Batman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and every other affiliated superhero, villain and acquaintance from that era of DC movies (well, except John Cena’s Peacemaker).

Despite being a fresh start for The Last Son of Krypton, Superman doesn’t waste too much time on the origin story we’ve all heard a thousand times before. David Corenswet (Pearl) plays a Clark Kent that is already three years into his career as Superman; he’s also an established journalist at the Daily Planet and recently began dating his whip-smart colleague Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan).

The movie opens with a bloodied and beaten Superman and a title card explaining that the Man of Steel has just lost his first fight. Superman’s intervention in a thorny international land conflict between two fictional countries has become an issue for Metropolis when the Hammer of Boravia, a mysterious armoured metahuman, confronts and wallops Superman on his home soil.

It’s immediately obvious that things aren’t quite what they seem. Longtime nemesis and supervillain, Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), makes no effort to hide his involvement and uses the city-wide fracas as a smokescreen to dig up more information on Superman and Krypton.

That’s the general gist of Kal-El’s story this time around the Sun but what really makes the movie is the supporting cast of colleagues, friends, and family. Every one of Superman’s satellite support groups is represented perfectly; Ma and Pa Kent, the Daily Planet crew. and the scrappy Justice Gang all get a healthy amount of screentime and each has their own standout characters. Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific is a revelation, essentially an even cooler Tony Stark. Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen brings a lot of laughs and mysterious swagger, and Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane is tough-as-nails, a somewhat cynical reporter with a strong moral backbone.
