There are a few reasons that your Chromecast streaming device may be having trouble connecting to your WiFi network. Any one—or a combination of—these issues could be the cog in your wireless wheels.

Luckily, there are a number of quick fixes to help you troubleshoot your Chromecast. If these don't work, then it's possible that you have a faulty unit and may need to take it back to the store. Read on to learn about how to properly fix your Chromecast setup issues. Note that some of these fixes will work for both the older generations and the newer Chromecasts with Google TV, while others are only relevant for one or the other.

In this article:

How to fix your Chromecast: Quick steps

To fix your Chromecast setup issues, you can try the following:

  • Make sure your Chromecast is connected to the same network
  • Conduct a factory data reset by holding the reset button your dongle for 25 seconds
  • Reset your modem or router
  • Use the HDMI extender cable that came with your Chromecast
  • Move your router closer to your Chromecast
  • Make sure you're running your Chromecast on a 2.4GHz network frequency
  • Update your router's firmware, if needed
  • Adjust your router's channels

These fixes are outlined in further detail below, or you can also watch the video from our friends on Reviews.org US which shows you 6 tips on how to troubleshoot your Chromecast.

Chromecast Setup Fix #1: Check Your WiFi Network

Maybe you recently changed your router password and forgot to update your Chromecast. Or maybe you added a second network to your home, and now your mobile devices are connected to a different WiFi option than your Chromecast. Either way, the first and easiest thing to fix a WiFi setup error with your Chromecast is to make sure it’s connected to the same network as your mobile devices. Once you’ve confirmed that they match, you can try one of the later options.

This will only work for older Chromecasts however. Chromecasts with Google TV work a bit differently, and while you can still cast from your device straight to the TV with these, it is no longer the primary function. Regardless the tip still stands. If your Chromecast isn't connected to the WiFi then it won't work. Double check that your device is connected through your Google Home app on your phone, or through your TV once connected.

Chromecast Setup Fix #2: Use the Extender

Older Chromecasts came with a short HDMI extender cable. This is a stiff cable, a couple of inches long, that will cause your Chromecast to stick out of the back of the TV. The purpose of this cable is to give your device a little more breathing room to detect WiFi networks.

Televisions are essentially giant shields through which signals have a very difficult time passing. Your Chromecast needs all the help it can get. Even if this isn't the problem, it's a good idea to use on the off chance it will improve streaming speeds.

For 2020 Chromecasts and newer, the extender is built in to the device so this fix isn't relevant.

Chromecast Setup Fix #3: Move Your Router

Along the same vein, if your router is in a distant area of the house, or if it’s at such an angle that it has difficulty getting to your Chromecast, then it may be time to move it to a better spot closer to your WiFi-connected devices.

Alternatively, you could get a WiFi extender or separate WiFi router to place near the Chromecast.

Buffering issues?

If you're consistently experiencing buffering issues on your Chromecast, or through any streaming devices then your internet connection may be the issue.

All streaming services are different, but generally you need to have download speeds of 5Mbps or greater to be able to stream seamlessly in HD. If your current connection is too slow, or there are too many people using it then it may be the culprit interupting your binge watch.

Chromecast Setup Fix #4: Reset Your Modem/Router

Turn your modem and router (both are often part of the same device) off and disconnect from power. Wait around 10 seconds and reconnect power before turning them back on (modem first, router second, if you have separate units).

Wait around 30 seconds to 1 minute before trying to connect your Chromecast again.

Chromecast Setup Fix #5: Factory Data Reset

The next fix is to completely reset your Chromecast back to its factory defaults. This will not delete any of your app data—all it means is that your Chromecast number will change (which makes no difference to you or your devices) and you’ll have to go through the setup process again.

Hold down the button on the back of your Chromecast dongle for at least 25 seconds. Once your TV screen goes blank you can let go and wait for it to clear its memory.

It's also a good idea to try a using different device during your second setup attempt. For example: If you tried to set it up using the Google Home app on your phone the first time, download the app to your housemate's and try using theirs the second.

Chromecast Setup Fix #6: Ensure Your Network Operates at 2.4GHz

If a complete reset doesn't work, it may be time to look at your router's signal settings. There are two frequency bands over which WiFi networks operate: 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Chromecasts only work on 2.4GHz.

This can be annoying, but the silver lining is that 2.4GHz is the superior of the two options for a streaming device, thanks to its lower frequency being better at penetrating solid objects.

Go in to your router settings (instructions are usually on the bottom of your router) and check the frequency it’s operating on. Select 2.4GHz for your Chromecast.

If your other devices are connected to a 5GHz network you might be able to leave them be, depending on the abilities of your router. Just make sure you tick the option for “Enable guest mode” during the Chromecast setup process.

Chromecast Setup Fix #7: Update Your Router's Firmware

When you log in to your router's settings menu, there may be a notification regarding a firmware update; if there is, click it. Even if it ends up making no difference to your situation, at the very least it will improve your network security and may speed up your NBN speeds at the same time.

Chromecast Setup Fix #8: Adjust Your Router Channels

Most routers allow you to toggle between the wireless channels they run on. If the channel your router is automatically set to is the same one used by your neighbors, interference can occur.

Go into your router settings (instructions should be on the underside of your router; if not, try a web search using your router’s brand and model number) and look for a section called “Wireless” and a subsection called “Channel and SSID." The names of these menus may vary depending on your router.

Find the “channel” field. If it is set to “Auto”, change it to any numbered option. If the problem continues, change it again until you find a channel with less interference. Alternatively, use a tool like WiFiInfoView to take a look at your surrounding WiFi networks and what channels they run on.

Popular opinion around the web is that Chromecast operates best on channels 1, 6 and 11, although we’ve seen no evidence of a specific channel making a spot of difference. Just make sure that as few of your neighbours as possible use the same channel as you. This will not only improve Chromecast performance, but WiFi speeds and reliability in general should be better once you make the change.

Chromecast FAQs

What is Chromecast, anyway?

Chromecast is Google’s plug-in video streaming device, similar to a Apple TV device. With Chromecast, you have access to streaming apps and services including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Stan, and more. You can browse and control your Chromecast using the Google Home app on your mobile device, like you would usually use a remote control.

The latest model however is more of a streaming hub, similar to Apple TV, Telstra TV, or even Fetch. The Chromecast with Google TV retains all its casting abilities, but also allows you to use a small handheld remote to access your favourite streaming apps and download movies and TV shows directly through the platform.

How do I connect Chromecast to my TV?

Your Chromecast setup should be quite easy.

  1. First, plug one end of the provided USB cable into your Chromecast device, and the other end into the provided power adapter.
  2. Then, connect your Chromecast device to an HDMI port on your TV.
  3. Lastly, plug the power adapter into your power outlet.
That’s it! You’re ready to connect your Chromecast to WiFi and get started.

How do I connect Chromecast to my WiFi?

Connecting Chromecast to your WiFi will differ slightly based on whether you have an Android or iOS mobile device.

  1. First, plug one end of the provided USB cable into your Chromecast device, and the other end into the provided power adapter.
  2. Then, connect your Chromecast device to an HDMI port on your TV.
  3. Next, plug the power adapter into your power outlet.
  4. Download the Google Home app to your preferred mobile device.
  5. If you have an iOS-powered device, make sure your Bluetooth is turned on. (Android-powered devices will connect automatically.)
  6. Open the Google Home app—the WiFi setup steps should appear for you.
  7. If they don’t, find “Add” on your home screen, choose “Set up device,” and follow the prompts from there.

That’s it! Your Chromecast should now be connected to your WiFi and ready to stream.

How do I connect Chromecast to my mobile device?

To pair your phone or tablet to Chromecast, all you need is the Google Home app. Download the app, and make sure your phone is connected to the same WiFi network that you want your Chromecast to be on. Then, open Google Home and follow the instructions to pair your devices.

Why isn’t my Chromecast working on my computer?

In order to cast from your computer you will need to be using a Chrome browser.

My Google Home app can’t find Chromecast. What should I do?

First, double-check that your device is plugged in and powered on. Then, if you have multiple WiFi networks set up in your home, make sure your Chromecast and Google Home are both connected to the same one. You can do this in the Settings of each device.

Lastly, make sure you’ve given the Google Home app the right location permissions on your mobile device. In the app settings for Google Home, ensure that Location is toggled to “on.”
