Over nine long years, countless character deaths, and plenty of sexposition, Game of Thrones feels like the last TV series that (almost) everyone was watching. While the soaring highs were marred by the lows of the latter seasons, its hard to call the series anything but iconic.
Despite the murky tail-end of the series, it's still obvious from the first few seasons that Game of Thrones well-and-truly deserves to be remembered as one of the most significant television shows of all time.
If you're keen to revisit the golden years, we've covered all your legal options for getting your Game of Thrones fix in Australia.
HBO Max
HBO Max is the easiest way to watch Game of Thrones locally, with access to countless HBO classics starting at $11.99 per month. That's if you don't mind regular ad breaks. $15.99 per month will get you ad-free HD streaming on two devices. You'll need to go for the $21.99 Premium plan if you're hoping to stream Game of Thrones in 4K. It's not the cheapest streaming service, but there are plenty of ways to knock the monthly price down.
HBO Max is available on iOS, Android, most browsers, Apple TV, Google TV, Chromecast and most smart televisions.
Foxtel (via HBO Max)
When Game of Thrones first aired, Foxtel (and for a while Presto, Foxtel Now and Binge) was the only avenue for watching Game of Thrones episodes as they released in Australia. That's no longer the case. In early 2025, Warner Bros. streaming service HBO Max officially launched in Australia, and took most of its premium drama back from Foxtel and Binge in the process, including Game of Thrones.
Although Foxtel and Binge no longer have Game of Thrones, Foxtel subscribers do get a free 12 months of HBO Max Basic - which does have Game of Thrones - included in any residential iQ plan. That's up to $143 of savings over the year.
Here's a range of Foxtel plans that are eligible for free HBO Max Basic.

Buy through Apple TV and Google Play
If you'd prefer to own digital copies of Game of Thrones, the entire series is available through retailers like Apple TV, Google Play and Amazon.
On Apple TV, individual seasons will set you back between $16.99 to $24.99 a pop. You can buy the entire digital collection for $174.99 (roughly $21.90 per season).
All considered, that only works out at roughly $9.95 cheaper than if you purchased each season separately. For some reason, seasons one to six all cost $24.99 a pop, whereas season seven and eight cost $17.99 and $16.99, respectively.
At that price, it would be worth considering the entire Blu-ray collection, which currently retails for $199 at JB HI-FI.
More Game of Thrones
In the years since the Game of Thrones finished up on television, we've been hearing about spin-offs, sequels and prequels without a lot to actually show for it. Still, while there might be more on the horizon, there are three seasons of television adapted from the works of George R.R. Martin that Thrones fans can move onto after rolling credits on Season 8.
Premiering in 2022, House of the Dragon is set nearly 200 years before the events detailed in Game of Thrones . Based on the 2018 novel Fire & Blood, it follows the rise of princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, after he title is challenged by family and allies who believe the Targaryen heir should be a male. There are already two seasons of House of the Dragon with a third set to release in 2026, and a fourth and final season sometime thereafter.
Both seasons of House of the Dragon are now streaming on HBO Max.
The next spin-off is more recent. A Knight of the Kingdoms is a little lighter in its tone and a lot shorter in its length, but it's a certified hit amongst A Song of Ice and Fire fans. Based on the Dunk & Egg novellas, the series follows Ser Duncan the Tall (or Dunk for short) on his journey to be recognised as a knight. Along the way, Dunk takes in a mysterious young lad as his squire, known only as Egg and, eventually, comes into contact with loveable characters from every echelon of the Westeros social and economic heirarchy.
The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is now streaming on HBO Max in Australia.
Forgot what happened in Game of Thrones? Here's a quick recap we put together towards the end of the series' run. It should go without saying, but it's full of spoilers. And some swearing.
