SBS will air all remaining FIFA World Cup matches, following technically issues surrounding Optus Sport. SBS was originally set to air games up until the end of the Group Stage on June 29, but today confirmed that it will continue broadcasting matches live, free, and in HD until the end of the tournament.
Matches will also be available through Optus Sport, which has been made available for free for all Australians until August 31. Customers who paid for Optus Sport as a standalone subscription are eligible for a refund, which should come through in the next week.
Despite the technical issues and SBS simulcast arrangement, Optus CEO Allen Lew says Optus Sport viewership numbers have continued to rise.
"We encourage people to download the Optus Sport app and give us a try," said Lew.
Optus originally paid $8 million for exclusive rights to the World Cup, which left SBS with 25 out of 64 matches.
