The Telstra TV service will officially be deactivated at 11:59pm October 31, making the telco's original set-top boxes useless.

You'll still be able to use your Telstra TV up until that time, but when the service deactivates on Halloween you'll no longer be able to browse, watch, access apps or change any settings.

Telstra already discontinued Telstra TV Box Office on June 30. The Box Office was a place to rent or buy films, customers could spend Telstra Plus points instead of cash. Customers can move eligible purchased titles from the Telstra TV Box Office to Fetch until January 31 next year.

Customers can recycle the deactivated Telstra TV unit at any of Telstra's 300 retail stores.

The move follows as the telco goes all-in on Fetch TV as its entertainment offer. Telstra acquired a majority stake in Fetch TV in 2022.

The telco has even been offering existing Telstra TV customers to upgrade to a Fetch TV Mini 4K since December last year as it prepared to discontinue the service.

It's a tumultuous time for the pay TV market. In recent months individual services have been raising their prices while cracking down on password sharing. News Corp is even looking to sell its share of Foxtel just months on from when it launched new platform Hubbl.

First released back in 2015 the Telstra TV was based on the Roku streaming device from the US. It was the beginning of the streaming era in Australia with Netflix having just launched locally.

The Telstra TV first came to market with services like Netflix, Stan and Presto (a shortlived platform brought together by Foxtel and Seven West Media). The latest and last, generation of the device, the Telstra TV 3 was released in 2019.
