Nicolas Winding Refn - director of Drive and The Neon Demon - has launched his own free video streaming service dedicated to cult films. In a piece he penned for The Guardian, Refn said byNWR was born from his hobby of buying and restoring old movie prints.
"I wondered what to do with them," wrote Refn. "Then I realised I should share them for free, so I set up a website where they could be streamed. There’s no catch; you’re not being sold anything. Take it or leave it."
While the service only has three films at present, byNWR also has a whole host of reading material associated with each title. A newly restored movie will be added each month.
The titles currently available are as follows:
The Nest of the Cuckoo Birds: "An undercover agent is sent to infiltrate bootleggers in the Florida Everglades, but winds up lost in the swamps and stuck in a decrepit hotel with a few of peculiar inhabitants. What starts off like a police actioner quickly morphs into an unholy fairy tale of Southern Gothic melodrama and horror."
Hot Thrills and Warm Chills: "Rita Alexander stars as the towering gang leader of a trio of hoodlum gals looking to make one last big score, run away with a mess of diamonds and live the dream in paradise. An eccentric gem from Texas wildcard director Dale Berry, underscored by a relentlessly brilliant Perez Prado soundtrack."
Shanty Tramp: "A small-town Southern prostitute has to decide between her lust for a black man and her meal-ticket, the sleazy revival-tent preacher who’s just rolled into town."
byNWR is currently only accessible in a web browser. Videos can be streamed in up to 1080p. Streaming is free, but you'll need to sign-up for an account.
