August brings with it a spattering of new, and returning content to Apple TV Plus, and while the streamer isn't observing 'Shark Week' like HBO Max it does have some tangentially related themes.
The brand new series Chief of War by Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa‘a Sibbett lands on the platform come August 1. The trailer doesn't guarantee any sharks, but the indigenous-led action/thriller series is set on the islands of Hawaii. Yes, that is my tentative Shark Week connection and I stand by it.
Chief of War looks to be a coloniser thriller, exploring the unification of the Hawaiian islands against the threat of western colonisation. Starring Momoa alongside a primarily indigenous cast, the nine episode run, based on true events is shaping up to be an epic depiction. Plus the theme and score was co-produced by the one, the only Hans Zimmer.
Episode one, and two will drop at the same time on August 1, with new eps every Friday.
For something a bit lighter, the codependent comedy Platonic returns for its second season from August 6. If you haven't watched the first season, you absolutely should - the story revolves around two old besties Syliva (Rose Byrne) and Will (Seth Rogen), who reconnect after Will's marriage ends. Ultimately, the backslide pushes the pair to mutually assured destruction, but in a joyful way. Seth Rogen is having an absolute slam hit of a run with his productions, and while this one feels more classically Rogen, it is just as entertaining as The Studio, and not as stressful.
