Prime Video's updated terms and conditions now guarantees annual members get a pro-rated refund for mid-term service cancellations. These new terms are outlined in the Updates and Modification of Service section, and mirrored again in the Amendments section.
"Where we make a materially adverse change to this Agreement or the Service, as reasonably determined by us, (a) we will provide you with prior written notice via email or reasonably substitutable means, and (b) if you have an annual membership and wish to cancel your service, you will be entitled to a pro-rated refund, and additional relevant details will be set out in that notice."
While annual Prime members have been eligible to apply for a pro-rated discount upon cancellation for some time, the service made no guarantees, and the policy wasn't reflected within the terms of services.
This addition comes after the provider came under fire for adding ads to the service. Ad-free subscriptions went up in price, but annual subs who entered into the year long commitment before the ads were introduced were shouldered with the advertising, and no way to remove them. While a class action lawsuit was filed against Amazon Prime for this change, it was since ruled against with the judge noting that adding commercials was not a breach of contract.
Annual subscribers who cancelled their plans after ads were introduced were recently offered refunds, or a year of free Prime as a form of apology.
