Six months after opening up shop in Australia, has launched its premium shopping service: Amazon Prime. An Amazon Prime membership will get you:
- Free two day delivery
- An Amazon Prime Video subscription
- A Twitch Prime subscription with free games and "bonus in-game loot" each month
- A rotating selection of eBooks
- Access to special deals
Amazon Prime is billed at $6.99 per month or $59 per year. If you go month-to-month, you'll pay $4.99 per month until the end of January 2019 as an introductory offer.
Internationally, Amazon Prime membership typically gets you same-day or next-day delivery, but this isn't included as part of Amazon's local offer. Two-day delivery is available for Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney and regional cities including. Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Gold Coast, Gosford, Newcastle, Shepparton–Mooroopna, Toowoomba, Wagga Wagga. Amazon expects other regional and rural customers to get their deliveries in four to five days.
While next-day delivery isn't free in Australia, Prime members will however receive a discount on priority shipping.
Amazon Prime appears to have replaced standalone the standalone Amazon Prime Video subscriptions available in Australian, but the pricing is comparable. Amazon Prime Video was previously billed at USD$2.99 for the first six months, and USD$5.99 thereafter. At current exchange rates, that converted to about $4 and $8 per month, respectively.
The local Amazon Prime launch comes shortly after the retail giant's decision to lock out Australian customers from their international stores. This will come into effect on July 1, alongside the Federal Government's new GST laws that require international businesses to collect GST on purchases made by Australians.
