Australia’s third largest ISP has revealed it will go to war with big brands Foxtel, Fetch TV and possible Netflix when it launches a premium content IPTV service next year.
The move coincides with Foxtel announcing it will move in on TPG turf by offering its own broadband and home phone services, bundling them in what Foxtel is calling a ‘triple play’.
According to Fairfax Media, TPG will be able to match Foxtel’s bundles when it switches on premium content over its IPTV functionality, and combines the service with its popular broadband and fixed-line telephone products.
TPG wouldn’t comment on the content deals it is working on with partners, but it will need to be of the highest quality to remain competitive. Foxtel continues to expand its digital delivery options, with the launch of Presto earlier in the year, and plans to make the core Foxtel product cheaper and more flexible.
The battle for your eyeballs will be fierce next year, with Channel Nine's StreamCo expected to launch and existing streaming service Quickflix and FetchTV with established subscriber bases.
But an even bigger threat is looming on the horizon, with rumours US-based Netflix will expand its operations into Australia next year. It’s believed that Netflix could have as many as 200,000 Australians already subscribed to its product, despite it being illegal for Australian’s to access content which Netflix does not hold local broadcasting rights for.
