Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Netflix is once again getting more expensive in Australia. The streaming giant today increased its Basic plan pricing from $9.99 per month to $10.99 per month and its Standard plan pricing from $13.99 per month to $15.99 per month. Netflix's Premium plan - which was subject to a price hike last October - will stay at $19.99 per month.
Netflix says it increased prices in order to invest in more shows and films.
Despite the increase in price, Netflix's plan inclusions are still the same. A Basic subscription still only gets you standard definition streaming, while the Standard plan maxes out at high definition. Here are how inclusions and pricing compare across Netflix's three tiers:
Netflix prices in Australia
| Basic | Standard | Premium | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price per month | $10.99 | $15.99 | $19.99 |
| Resolution | SD | HD | Up to 4K |
| Simultaneous streams | 1 | 2 | 4 |
| Offline download devices | 1 | 2 | 4 |
Netflix's price change comes into effect from today for new subscribers. Customers currently on the Basic and Standard plan should see the price rise on their next monthly bill.
The move makes Netflix the most expensive mainstream streaming service in Australia. For comparison, Binge and Stan both have entry level tiers at $10 per month and standard tiers at $14 per month. Binge has a premium tier at $18 per month, while Stan's premium tier will set you back $17 per month. Amazon Prime Video is the cheapest mainstream service available locally, billed at $6.99 per month with no tiered options.
Today's price hike follows Netflix axing quietly axing its 30-day free trial offer for new subscribers earlier this year.
