Across the team at WhistleOut, we're pretty keen on what HBO Max has to offer in September. Friendship, Rick and Morty, and Peacemaker are our main picks for the best content worth watching on the platform this month, but there are a bunch of existing hits waiting for you to devour.
If you, like us have been aching for a classic Paul Rudd film, Friendship looks like it will deliver. The A24 film follows a budding and chaotic friendship of Craig (Tim Robinson) and his new neighbour (Rudd). After its run at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival, the film was a modest success in the box office, but leans very much in the same vein of I Love You Man. Awkward, slapstick, but bordering on a thriller thanks to Robinson and Rudd's chemistry. It hits HBO Max on September 6.
Continuing in the awkward, thriller vibe, we're still watching Rick and Morty. From the Community creator Dan Harmon, this season continues the nihilistic absurdity we've grown to love in Harmon's work and specifically in Rick and Morty. Like any long running show (and yes, we consider eight seasons to be long), there are going to be some road bumps along the way. While season 8 isn't the show at its finest, the overarching storyline still makes it worth watching.
Riding on the cape tails of Superman, the latest addition to the DC Universe Peacemaker is another one to strap in for this month. Headed up by the incomparable John Cena, the shoe explores another in DC's line of anti-heroes. His job is to keep the peace, and he will do so by any means necessary. When he is transported to a parallel universe where he has achieved his goal, everything seems perfect. Peaceful. But nothing is truly as it seems.
