After years of speculation, Foxtel is launching a new standalone streaming service set to directly compete against the likes of Netflix and Stan. Named Binge, the platform will get customers access to premium Foxtel content such Game of Thrones for as little as $10 per month when it goes live on Monday.
The pricing is especially notable given the high-cost typically associated with Foxtel services. Foxtel's current streaming service, Foxtel Now, starts at $25 per month. A traditional Foxtel subscription will set you back a minimum of $49.
Binge will launch with three different tiers: a $10 per month standard definition plan that allows one stream at a time, a $14 per month high definition plan that allows two simultaneous streams, and an $18 per month high definition plan that allows four simultaneous streams. This puts Binge's pricing in line with Netflix and Stan, which start at $9.99 per month and $10 per month, locally.
Unlike rival services, Binge isn't offering content in 4K. A spokesperson told there are "no plans to launch 4K any time soon," but this will be re-evaluated over the next 12 months.
In terms of content, Binge will launch with over 10,000 hours of TV series and movies, from partners such as HBO, BBC, FX, NBC Universal, ViacomCBS, Warner Bros, Discover, Sony Pictures Television, Warner Media, Fremantle, Studio Canal, ITV, Paramount, and more.
This makes Binge the cheapest option for streaming HBO titles such as Game of Thrones, Chernobyl, Westworld, Watchmen, and more, as well other prestige drama including Devs, Mrs. America, and The Walking Dead.
The service is also home to a whole host of comedy, including The Office, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, Veep, Seinfield, Fraiser, What We Do In The Shadows, and Sex and the City.
While Binge is clearly focused on TV, it will also launch with over 800 movies.
At launch, Binge will work be compatible with iPhone, iPad, and Android smartphones and tablets in terms of mobile devices, and Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari in terms of browsers.
Binge also supports fourth generation Apple TVs, Google Chromecast, Telstra TV, and Android smart TVs. A Binge app is in development for Samsung smart TVs and is expected to be available within three to four months. Other smart TV apps are set to follow.
A PlayStation app should be available within a year, but there are no plans for a Binge Xbox app yet.
Binge will go live on May 25 with a two-week free trial.
