Disney+

Since it first teased original productions like The Mandalorian and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier we’ve been itching for more details on the local launch for Disney’s streaming service, Disney+. Thankfully, Disney has given us just that with a confirmed Australian release date, local pricing, and device compatibility. Here’s everything we know so far about Disney+ in Australia.

When does Disney+ launch in Australia?

Disney+ will be available from November 19th 2019 in Australia (landing on a Tuesday). That’s just one week after the service launches in the US, Canada, and the Netherlands on November 12th. Disney hopes to have its streaming platform available in most major global markets within two years of its initial launch.

How much will Disney+ cost in Australia?

Disney+ will cost $8.99 AUD per month in Australia. You will also have the option to purchase a full year of Disney+ at the discounted price of $89.99 AUD per year.

Disney has also confirmed that a Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ bundle will be released at $12.99 USD per month but it’s not clear if that will be available at launch or if we will even see it in Australia, considering neither Hulu and ESPN+ are available here.

What devices will Disney+ be compatible with?

Disney announced a list of streaming devices that will be compatible at launch: iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, Android mobile, Android TV, Chromecast, web browsers, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Roku.

Disney will have more compatible devices to announce before launch. It has locked down agreements with global providers to get Disney+ on the devices people “already use every day”. We may see the service available on devices like Telstra TV (a rebranded Roku set-top box).

What does the arrival of Disney+ Down Under mean for you?

Firstly, the local launch of Disney+ means Australians will be one of the first five countries in the world to get their hands on the new streaming service (next to the US, Canada, Netherlands and New Zealand). That’s pretty neat for a country that often falls behind when it comes to television and film.

From day one, we’ll be able to stream a decent roster of exclusive and original TV shows, like The Mandalorian, Forky Asks a Question, and The World According to Jeff Goldblum, original flicks like the Lady and the Tramp remake, and other blockbusters from Disney such as Captain Marvel.

There’s a short lineup of TV shows and movies that have been confirmed as day one content but Disney plans to shift its entire catalogue to the streaming service eventually.

That leaves a couple of questions open. Firstly, will Stan be waving goodbye to its precious Disney partnership before November 19th? And will Disney+ save Fox TV shows like The Simpsons from on-demand limbo?

There’s also the question as to whether we’ll get ESPN+, Hulu, and the discounted bundle for all three, although this seems unlikely at this stage. So many questions.

Thankfully, Disney’s annual D23 event kicks off later this week on August 24th where Disney has promised it will share even more information on the upcoming streaming service.
