Emmy award holding up the Facebook logo on a pink and orange background

Today the Television Academy announced the finalists for the 77th Annual Emmy Awards, and among the other tech giants featured, Meta is up for three. No, the Facebook behemoth isn't secretly producing television shows, but it has been creating immersive experiences via its Quest division, earning three nominations for Outstanding Emerging Media Program.

Meta has been nominated every year since the category's introduction in 2023, but is yet to go home with a trophy. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the company should get a win this year however, as it is just competing against itself. Impulse: Playing With Reality - an interactive narrative game, and two special event VR shows - Shawn Mendes: Red Rocks Live in VR, and SNL 50th The Anniversary Special: Immersive Experience - are the only three nominations in the category, and they are all Meta productions.

Competition is hotter for the other tech companies up for Emmys this season. Apple's slate of original programming is up for 79 awards, including 31 acting category noms for hits like Severence, and The Studio. Plus, the non Plus part of Apple has two commercials in the running for the Outstanding Commercial category. Prime Video has 12 nominations, mostly centred on its hit superhero propaganda show The Boys, and even YouTube is up for four short-form awards.

HBO/Max (formerly Max, now HBO Max) still has the biggest showing amongst the streamers, accumulating 142 nominations across shows like The White Lotus, The Penguin, The Pitt, The Last of Us, and (delightfully for my tastes) Fantasmas.

The Emmys will kick off in the evening of September 14 in Australia, but the award show will actually broadcast at 10am AEST on September 15 on Foxtel's Arena channel. Broadcasts will also be available across your chosen video streaming platform like TikTok, and YouTube, but Binge will hold the official re-run on Tuesday, September 16 from 10am AEST.
