What is Mubi?
Mubi is the home of curated movies for weird people and cinema freaks. Want to watch Polish mermaids working in a strip club? What about Michael Cera adamantly chasing down a San Pedro cactus in Chile? How about French cinema from 1905? That is the kind of content you’ll find streaming on Mubi. Not one for the normie film buff, Mubi prides itself on showcasing ambitious films by visionary film makers.
How much does Mubi cost in Australia?
Mubi costs between $8.99 and $14.99 per month in Australia, depending on the subscription tier. Monthly subs cost $14.99, annual subs come down to $9.99 per month, and students can land a bargain with an $8.99 per month plan. Each of these plans give users access to the full catalogue of curated content, the ability to download Offline Titles, and two simultaneous streams across five devices.
Even at its most expensive, Mubi’s pricing still sits at the low end for ad-free streaming services in Australia. Apple TV Plus and HBO Max are now up to $15.99 per month, Netflix is at $20.99, and even Stan will set you back $15 per month. The platform is also, staunchly, ad-free. While ads have permeated a range of streaming platforms, including Disney Plus and Binge, Mubi remains free from them. Just how streaming should be as far as we’re concerned. Here is how Mubi’s pricing compares to major streamers in Australia.
Yes, Mubi offers a 7-day free trial for all new subscribers. Within the week long period, users will have access to the full catalogue of content across the service, and will only be billed once the trial period has ended.
What can I watch on Mubi?
Mubi is all about the strange, outlandish, and epic. It’s whole schtick is curated viewing from “visionary film makers” with an emphasis on “ambitious” film making. Ultimately you’re in for some weird movies. These range from the absurd but highly discussed Megalopolis, to short films from unknown directors, to the latest indie hit doing the festival circuit. If you’re a film buff who enjoys off kilter viewing, Mubi will deliver.
Much of the content airing on Mubi is hard to find elsewhere, but that doesn’t mean it is lacking star power. Films with big names like Paul Mescal, Adam Driver, and Paul Rudd may still find their way onto the streamer for a time, but don’t expect them to be blockbuster hits. Think more Aubrey Plaza in Black Bear, than Aubrey Plaza in Dirty Grandpa.
Unlike other streamers that tend to have long running deals with various studios, Mubi’s focus tends to be on smaller creators. Hence content comes and goes from the platform at a faster rate than other platforms. Luckily the interface will prominently show you content on your watch list that is expiring soon, so it is easy to keep on top of it.
All content is available to stream with an active membership, and some movies dubbed “Offline Titles” are also available to download on mobile devices. Other publications have reported there is no limit to downloading content, but the Mubi terms specifically say there are limitations to how much can be downloaded and how many devices connected to the account can have Offline Titles. The details aren’t laid out however, so we say just go for it until they cut you off.
How to watch Mubi
All you need to watch Mubi in Australia (apart from a subscription), is a good internet connection and a compatible streaming device. Mubi has apps across the major streaming devices from Apple, Google, and Amazon, as well as smart televisions, phones and tablets, the main internet browsers, Playstation and Nvidia Shield devices. It is a pretty all-encompassing list, as long as you’re not an Xbox exclusive user.
On the internet front, pretty much any NBN plan these days should be enough to keep you streaming on Mubi. The platform has content up to 720p, but it doesn’t upscale older films so some are in SD. For seamless HD viewing the recommended download speed is 5Mbps or higher per stream, while for SD it is 0.5Mbps. As a rule we wouldn’t suggest an NBN plan lower than 50Mbps for most households. Here are the most popular plans available right now.
