HBO has given the chaotic comedic minds behind I Think You Should Leave a big bag of cash to make a premium television series. Created by Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin, The Chair Company is an eight-part comedy-mystery series starring Tim Robinson himself as Ron Trosper, a corporate manager who suffers severe embarrassment when a faulty chair collapses beneath him during an on-stage presentation.
Fans of I Think You Should Leave, Detroiters and Robinson’s 2025 film Friendship will love every second of The Chair Company’s snackable 25 to 30-minute episodes. Others may be very confused and possibly a little scared.
The Chair Company premieres this week exclusively on HBO Max with new episodes releasing every week.

How to watch The Chair Company in Australia
Tim Robinson may have become a household name on Netflix but it's HBO who is footing the bill for his latest TV series. As such, The Chair Company will be streaming on HBO Max exclusively. HBO Max is a premium streaming services that's comparable with services like Netflix, Binge and Disney Plus. Plans start at $11.99 per month (or $119.99 per year) for ad-supported HD streaming on two devices. Ditching the ad breaks will cost you at least $15.99 per month (or $159.99 per year) and if you want to stream The Chair Company in 4K, you will need to pay $21.99 per month (or $219.99 per year) for Premium, which gets you ad-free 4K streaming on four devices.
There isn't a free trial available in Australia but there are a few HBO Max deals that you can find if you want to reduce your monthly bill. Perhaps the most tempting of these deals is free access to HBO Max with any Foxtel plan.
Foxtel customers get a year of HBO Max Basic for free with any plan.

What is The Chair Company?
That’s the question of the century. What is The Chair Company is the very question that leads William Ronald “Ron” Trosper down a nightmarish bureaucratic rabbit hole.
Ron Trosper seems to have it pretty good. He’s happily married to his wife Barb (Lake Bell) and has two adoring children, Natalie (Sophia Lillis) and Seth (Will Price). To top it all off, his boss (Lou Diamond Phillips) has recently promoted him to project lead for the development of a new shopping mall (they’ve changed a lot in the last few years).
When an office chair breaks on stage during Ron’s big presentation, the unbearable embarrassment leads him to file a complaint with the manufacturer. Only, the manufacturer doesn’t seem to exist, and whoever is behind “the chair company” doesn’t want to be found. If you’ve ever sat on hold with customer service for an unusually long time or encountered a 404 error on a company's customer service page, you will understand Ron’s pain. However, where most of us would go about our lives or, at most, leave a bad Google review, Ron won’t sleep until he finds the actual people responsible for manufacturing the flimsy office chair.
If I had to sum up The Chair Company, I would say it’s a comedy first and a genuinely intriguing mystery-thriller second. Like the movie Friendship before it, it also feels like one long I Think You Should Leave sketch, and I mean, who’s complaining? Not me.
